Thirty-Sixth Congregation for the Conferment of Honorary and Higher Degrees The University held its Thirty-sixth Congregation for the conferment o f honorary and higher degrees on 6th October, 1988. The occasion also served to commemorate the 25th anniversary o f the University. His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor o f the University, Sir David Wilson, officiated at the ceremony which took place at Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Over 1,000 graduates, parents and guests attended the ceremony, among them two overseas members of the University Council, the Right Honourable Lord Todd o f Trumpington and Dr. Clark Kerr. The University conferred honorary degrees on six distinguished persons. Sir David Akers- Jones and the Honourable Peter Poon Wing-cheung were awarded the degree o f Doctor o f Laws, honoris causa; Professor Ching-Wu Chu and Professor Zhao Zhong Xian the degree o f Doctor o f Science, honoris causa; Mr. Yu Zhen Fei received the degree o f Doctor o f Literature, honoris causa; and Mrs. Esther Yewpick Lee the degree o f Doctor o f Social Science, honoris causa. The public orator was Mr. T.L. Tsim, director o f The Chinese University Press, who also wrote the citations. Sir David Akers-Jones addressed the ceremony on behalf o f the honorary graduates. The mace-bearer was Dr. Christopher Lam, senior lecturer in chemical pathology. The congregation also saw the award o f higher degrees to 246 graduates, including one Doctor o f Medicine, three Doctors o f Philosophy, eighty-five Masters o f Philosophy, twenty Masters o f Arts, two Masters o f Divinity, twenty-five Masters o f Arts (Education), three Masters o f Science, three Masters o f Social Work and 104 Masters o f Business Administration. 2
