and the Hong Kong Translation Society. Dr. Almberg has participated in international research projects such as Stanford University' s 'Studies in Chinese Archaeological Materials ' and assisted in editing the poetry volume of A Selective Guide to Chinese Literature 1900-1949 under the auspices of the European Science Foundation. Her published papers include those on earlier Chinese translators of Western literature and cross-cultural interpretation of Chinese poetry. Among other things, Dr. Almberg has published translations of Lu Xun's essays on literature and art. Her latest publication is the rendition of seven poems by Chen Jingrong in Chinese Literature , summer, 1989. A t present, Dr. Almberg is translating a book on modern fiction technique and p l ann i ng the comp i l a t i o n of an annotated bibliography of translations of Chinese literature into Scandinavian languages. Gifts and Donations The University has recently received from local and overseas individuals and foundations the following gifts and donations in support of its programmes and projects: (1) From The B.Y. Lam Foundation Ltd.: (a) HK$1,500,000 for decoration and renovation of the extension o f the Institute o f Chinese Studies; and (b) a famille rose dish of Yongzheng period for the Art Gallery. (2) From Bank of Credit and Commerce HK$20,000 annually for the award of a scholarship to a 4th-year undergraduate of the Faculty of Business Administration or the Faculty of Social Science on a rotational basis wit h effect from 1989-90. (3) From Banque Nationale de Paris HK$5,000 fo r the award of a scholarship to a 2nd-year MBA student for participation in student exchange programmes. (4) From Gilman Office Machines HK$ 10,000 for the award of a scholarship to a 2nd-year MB A student f o r pa r t i c i pa t i on i n an exchange programme with the University of California at Los Angeles. (5) From the 1988 graduate class o f New Asia College HK$5,000 for a scholarship in New Asia College. (6) F r om The Ho n g K o n g Op h t h a l mo l o g i c al Society HK$2,000 annually for the award of an essay prize in ophthalmology to a medical student who has written the best essay related to ophthalmology with effect from 1989-90. (7) F r om Italian Un i ve r s i ty for Foreigners at Perugia Lit 1,920,000 for the establishment o f four scholarships to be awarded to students, preferably those studying the Italian language, for short-term studies at the Italian University for Foreigners at Perugia, Italy in the summer of 1989. (8) From J. Walter Thompson Co., Ltd. HK$20,000 annually for the award of two scholarships of HK$10,000 each to final-year undergraduates of the Department of Journalis m and Communication. (9) From Shell Hong Kong Ltd. HK$30,300 to sponsor six students to participate in an outward bound diploma course. (10) From Astra Pharmaceuticals, Sweden: (a) HK$16,000 for research on budesonide undertaken by the Department of Surgery; and (b) HK$1,974.55 for the cardiac workshop organized by the Department o f Medicine in November 1988.
