News in Brief The Thirty-eighth Congregation The University has announced that the thirty- eighth congregation w i l l be held on 12th October, 1989 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson, w i l l officiate at the ceremony. Four distinguished persons w i l l be awarded honorary degrees at the congregation. The Rt. Hon. L o r d Bu t t e r f i e l d of Stechford, Dr. Harry Fang Sin-yang and the Hon. Maria Tam Wai Chu w i ll be awarded the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa , and Professor L i Yuan Tseh, the degree of Doctor o f Science, honoris causa . The Rt. Hon. Lord Butterfield of Stechford, OBE, DM , FRCP is a distinguished British educator and scientist who has devoted more than fort y years to education and medicine. His distinguished career in higher education was marked by the key positions he held at the Nottingham University and Cambridge University. He was Vice-Chancellor of Nottingham University in the early 1970's and then served respectively as Regius Professor of Physic, Master of Downing College and Vice-Chancellor at Cambridge University during 1976-1987. He is a trustee of and has chaired many charitable trusts and foundations, two of which — the Jardine Educational Trust and th e Croucher Foundation of Hong Kong - operate in Hong Kong. He was also a member o f the Hong Kong University and Polytechnic Grants Committee from 1975 to 1983. In these capacities, Lord Butterfield has made remarkable contributions to the promotion of research and tertiary education development in Hong Kong. Dr. Ha r ry Fang S i n - yang, CBE, MB B S , MCh(Orth), L LD , FRCSE, FACS, FRACS, JP is well known locally for his dedicated service in the field of r ehab i l i t a t i on f or the handicapped. H i ms e l f a practising orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Fang became involved in rehabilitation service s for both the physically and mentally handicapped in the late sixties and over the last twenty years has been instrumental in the rapid expansion o f such services and their diversification into many new areas like sports and recreation. He chaired many committees related to the development of rehabilitation services locally and was president of the Rehabilitation International from 1980 to 1984. He was a member o f the Executive Council from 1978 to 1983 and the Legislative Council from 1974 to 1985. He became associated with The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1979 when he was appointed a member of the University Council. The Hon. Maria Tam Wai Chu, CBE, LLB, JP, is a prominent public figure and a well-respected lega l practitioner. Miss Tam has a distinguishe d record of public service in her capacity as a member of both the Legislative and the Executive Councils. She has made important contributions to the local community by serving on many public bodies as well as committees appointed by the government. She chairs the Transport Advisory Committee and is a member of the Education Commission. She is also a member of the Basic Law Drafting Committee. Miss Tam's association with The Chinese University of Hong Kong began in 1983 when she joined the University Council. She also serves on the University's Terms of Service Committee. Professor Lee Yuan Tseh, BSc, MSc, PhD, is professor of chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley. Since the late sixtie s Professor Lee has devoted himself to research in chemical dynamics using molecular beam techniques, o f which he is one of the pioneers. He has made significan t contributions to the fundamentals of the nature of chemical reactions, most notably the mechanism of combustion. Professor Lee's work gained worldwide recognition and in 1986, together with two other scientists, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. He was also recipient of the US National Science Medal and the American Chemical Society Debye Award in 1986. Joint Admissions for the Universities The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) and the University of Hong Kong (HKU) have agreed to introduce a joint scheme for admission o f students to their first degree curricula in 1990 , with a view to admitting students to CUHK in September 1991 or to H K U in September 1992.
