icy of the Council on East Asian Studies, Harvard University, USA, was invited to visit the college from 25th October to 7th November, and conducted a 40th anniversary lecture on 'Chinese Culture and the Role of State' on 30th October. - P r o f e s s or Wu Rukang, renowned anthropologist of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleoanthropology, Academia Sinica, Beijing, visited the college from 25th October to 20th November under the S.Y. Chung Visiting Scholar Programme. He gave a public lecture entitled ‘The Origin of Man: New Developments in Its Research', on 31st October. - P r o f e s s or L in Jian-ming, professor of history, Xibei University, China, visited the college from 9th to 16th November under the Ming Yu Visiting and Research Programme. * The Shaw College organized the following lecture and seminars: —Professor Yuan-Tseh Lee, Nobel Laureate in chemistry 1986, and professor of chemistry, University of California, Berkeley, arrived in Hong Kong on 9th October to visit the Shaw College as its 1989 Sir Run Run Shaw Distinguished Visiting Scholar. During his stay, Professor Lee gave a lecture on 'Combustion of Fossil Fuel and Human Society' on 11th October. - A seminar on ‘AIDS and the Limits of Law' by Mr. P.A. Thomas, senior lecturer, Cardiff Law School, University of Wales, UK, and editor of Journal of Law and Society , on 8th December. The seminar was jointly organized with the Department of Government and Public Administration. — A seminar on 'Closed Head Injury Behavioural and Electrophysiological Indices of Outcome' by Professor Laurie Geffen, pro- vice-chancellor and professor of human physiology, and Professor Gina Geffen, professor of neuropsychology, Fliders University of South Australia, on 15th December. The seminar was jointly organized with the Department of Psychiatry. * The Department of Physics organized the following seminars: - ' T h e Kosterlifz-Thouless Phase Transition and Deconfinement of Quark Matter' by Professor N i Guang-jiong, Physics Department, Fudan University, China, on 10th October. - ‘ Me t a l - No nme t al Transitions in Two Dimensions' by D r. S. Solin, NEC Research Institute, Inc., USA, on 13th October. —‘ L a t t i ce Gauge Theories' by Professor R. Haymaker, Louisianna State University, USA, on 20th October. - ‘ C r y s t a l Growth, a Prelude to Solid State Physics' by Dr. Vincent Cheng, Chemistry Department, Hong Kong Baptist College, on 24th November. * The United College organized the following activities: —T h e Dean of Students' Office, Music Society and Student Union of United College, and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Society jointly organized the following music appreciation lecture series: (1) Mr. C.H. Ng spoke on 'The Symphony' on 10th October; (2) Mr. W. K. Chan and Mr. S.L. Lee, musicians of Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, spoke on 'Instrument of the Orchestra' on 31st October. —T he Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra held a concert on 26th October at the invitation of the Dean of Students' Office and the Music Society of the college, as part of the 33rd anniversary activities of the college. —Professor Jan Svartvik, professor of English, Lund University, Sweden, visited the college from 31st October to 13th November as its 1989 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. During his visit, Professor Svartvik gave three lectures: (1) ‘Is There a Place for Grammar in a Communicative Approach to Language Teaching?', on 2nd November; (2) ‘On the Study of Spoken English', on 7th November; and (3) ‘Corpus Linguistics: the Compilation, D i s t r i bu t i on and Use of Machine- readable Texts in the English Language', on 9th November. * The Depa r tment of Mu s ic organized the following activities: — A lecture on 'East-West Relations in the History of Portuguese Music' by Professor 15
