Fu Ding-yuan on 10th November. - A piano masterclass by Dr. Siglind Bruhn on 13th November. — A concert of the 'Chamber Music Series of Paul Hindemith' by Mr. Philip Dickeman ( f l u t e ) , Ms . Che r y l Hoa rd (horn), M r . Gregory Dugan (double bass) and Dr. Siglind Bruhn (piano) on 27th November. - A duo-concert by Ms. Junko Ueda (Satsuma- biwa/voice) and Mr . W i l Offermans (flutes), on 4th December. - T h e Chinese Music Archive of the Music Department organized the following activities: (a) Lecture on 'Percussion Music and Its Dramatic Function in Cantonese Opera' and 'Vocal Music in Cantonese Opera' by instructors and student-actors from the Guangdong Cantonese Opera School, on 23rd and 26th October respectively. (b) Lecture-demonstration on 'Chaozhou String Ensemble Music', by Miss Su Qiaozheng, a Chinese musician, on 20th November. (c) Symposium on Taoist Ritual Music from 27th to 29th December. The symposium was jointly organized with the Hong Kong Institute for Promotion of Chinese Culture, Yuen Yuen Institute and the editorial department of People’s Music. * The Office of International Studies Programmes presented a dinner talk on ‘A Personal Perspective on Hong Kong's Democratic Future' by Mr . Martin Lee, legislative councillor, on 11th October. * The Department of Religion presented the following lectures: —' Sp i r i t ua l i ty and Religious Educators‘ b y Professor Thomas Groome, professo r of religious education and theology, Boston College, USA, on 11th October. — ' T h e World in Relation to God: Contemporary Issues' by Professor Ninian Smart, University of California, USA, o n 21st November. * The Department of Chemistry organized the following seminars: —' Be n z y l Group and Peptide Synthesis - the Significance of Organic Reagents in the Studies of Organic Natural Products' and ‘Peptide Synthesis by Active Amide Method' by Professor Xing Qiyi , Chemistry Department, Peking University, China, on 20th and 27th October respectively. —'Determination o f Optical Isomers by NMR Spectrometric Methods' by Professor Fan Shiyan, Instrumental Research and Analysis Centre, Zhongshan University, Guangzhou, China, on 1 st December. — ‘ N o v e l Properties and Reactions of Some Crowded or Strained Molecules' by Dr. R.M. Letcher, Chemistry Department, University of Hong Kong, on 8th December. * The Cancer Research Group of th e Faculty of Medicine organized a symposium on cancer on 27th October. Professors from Shanghai Medical Sciences University, Shanghai Teachers University, and the Institute of Materia Medica, Academia Sinic a reported on the latest development in the treatment of cancer in mainland China. Other experts and scholars in the field also reported on their work in the treatment and research of cancer. * The Gender Role Research Programme of the Centre for Hong Kong Studies organized an international conference on Gender Studies in Chinese Societies on 9th and 10th November. About 3 0 scholars from mainland China, Taiwan, USA and Hong Kong took part in the conference. Topics discussed included theoretical issues and methodologies of gender studies, gender stereotypes, the status of 16
