Opening of Shaw College Opening Ceremony The official opening of Shaw College, the fourth constituent college of the University, took place on 2nd March 1990 inside its student-hostel block. His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson arrived at the college campus at about 4.00 p.m. with Lady Wilson. They were welcomed by Sir Quo-wei Lee, chairman of the University Council; Prof. Charles K. Kao , the Vice-Chancellor; Sir Run Run Shaw, the patron of Shaw College; Prof. Ma Lin, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw College; and Prof. C.N. Chen, head of the college. The ceremony started with an address of welcome by Sir Quo-wei Lee, who thanked all those involved in the planning of the college and especially Sir Run Run for his generosity and con t i nuous suppo rt to the University over the years. In the Chance l l o r 's speech which immediately followed, Sir David r e i t e r a t ed the need for an expansion programme in the tertiary education sector to maintain the continued success and prosperity of Hong Kong. He also commended the foresight of Sir Run Run and The Chinese University and their firm commitment to the expansion of f u r t her edu c a t i on in the Territory. Subsequent to the Chancellor's speech were an address from Sir Run Run Shaw, and a vote of thanks by a student representative. A f t e r a s i mp l e p l aque unveiling ceremony by Sir David and Sir Run Run, the official party were accompanied by Dr. K.P. Fung (dean of students, Shaw College) and Mr. Vincent Chen (director of buildings) to visit the newly-built student hostel. A tea reception was held afterwards at the multifunction hall of the amenities centre. Nearly 600 guests from overseas and from the local c ommun i t y a t t ended t he function. NEWS 2 .
