Opening of Shaw College Pre-opening Celebrations To celebrate its official opening, the college organized two large-scale functions in late February and early March: * Ensemble concert by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra on 28th February. In the concert, the Shaw College song composed by Prof. Lin Sheng-shih was performed for the first time. The function was jointly organized by Shaw College and the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall. Over 1 , 000 guests and students attended. * International symposium on The Roles of Colleges in a University' on 1st March at the Cho Yiu Conference Hall. Prof. Ma Lin welcomed all guests and participants in his capacity as chairman of the Board of Trustees of Shaw College. Five distinguished scholars were then invited by Prof. Thrower, emeritus professor of biology, CUHK and chairman of the symposium, to speak on the following subjects: 1. The Collegiate System at The Chinese University' by Prof. C.N. Chen, head of Shaw College, CUHK; 2. The Roles of Colleges in Cambridge' by Prof. D.H. Northcote, master of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University; 3. The College Community' by Prof. Robin W. Winks, master of Berkeley College, Yale University; 4. The Relationship between a University and Its Colleges' by Prof. Frederick G.T. Holliday, vice-chancellor and warden, University of Durham; 5. ' Prob l ems of an Ame r i can Collegiat e University' by Prof. D.E. McHenry , foundation and emeritus chancellor, University of California at Santa Cruz. There was enthusiastic discussion after each speech and Prof. Thrower as moderator of the discussion also made the concluding remarks at the close of the symposium. Prof C. N. Chen, head of Shaw College, presented a souvenir to Mr. Kuan Nai Chung, music director and conductor of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra. The Symposium NEWS 4
