They all concurred that technological cooperation would benefit both Chin a and Hong Kong: China's technological knowhow could help upgrade Hong Kong' s industry, and Hong Kong's experience in marketing management coul d help China commercialize and industrialize its technological achievements. They therefore calle d for the formulation of long-term strategies for technologica l cooperation in the 1990s and the establishment of a non-govemmental organization to initiate, promote and coordinate technological cooperation between the two places. Telecommunication, electronics, biotechnologic and petro-chemical industries, and software development were identified as the most promising areas for cooperation. After the conferences, a preparatory committee for an ‘Association for the Advancemen t of Technological Cooperation between Shenzhen and Hong Kong' was formed by interested parties to work on the draft constitution of the association, which was expected to be established by late 1990. c o n f e r e n c e s e r i e s 16
