News in Brief Members of the University Honoured * Prof. Baysung Hsu, pro- vice-chancellor and professor of physics, received the Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen's New Year Honours List announced on 31st December 1990. Prof. Hsu joined this university in 1964 as professor of physics and was elected several times as dean of science. He has since 1979 been appointed as pro-vice-chancellor of the University, and has served as chairman or member of many academic and administrative committees. Prof. Hsu's contribution to the overall development of The Chinese University over the years has been monumental. * Prof. Shu-ting Chang, p r o f e s s o r of b i o l ogy and director of the Institute of Science and Technology, was awa r d e d an I n t e r na t i onal Cooperation Award by China's Ministry of Light Industry. Prof. Chang has p r ov i ded China with assistance in mushroom breeding and in improving the cultivation techniques. * Dr. Leo P.K. Yam, lecturer in the School of Education, was awarded the 1990 Robert Dekieffer International Fe l l ows h ip Award by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology in recognition of his contributions in the field of educational communications and technology . The award carries with it a set of visual aids donated to the institution for which the awardee works. Council News * Dr. the Hon. Peter Poon Wing-cheung was re-elected vice-chairman of the University Council at the Council meeting held in October 1990 for a term of two years from 20th October 1990. * Dr. James Z.M. Kung has been appointed member of the Council's Finance Committee to succeed Dr. J.S. Lee from 17th October 1990. * Prof. Y.C. Wong, Council member since 1963, retired from the Council on 17th October 1990. The University thanked him for his dedicated and valuable service to the University Council over the last 27 years. * Prof. Baysung Hsu has been reappointed pro- vice-chancellor by the University Council for a further period of two years upon the expiration of his current term of office on 28th February 1991. * Prof. C.N. Chen has been reappointed head of Shaw College for a further period of thre e years upon the expiration of his current term of office on 10th February 1991. Professorial Appointments The University has appointed the following new professors: * Prof. Tunney F. Lee, as professor of architecture from 4th September 1990. * Prof. Lau Siu-kai, as professor of sociology from 1st October 1990. * Prof. Kuan Hsin-chi, as professo r of government and public administration from 1 st January 1991. * Prof. Byron S.J. Weng, as professor of government and public administration from 1st January 1991. Dean of Business Administration Prof. K.C. Mun has been re-elected dean of the Faculty of Business Administration for a term of three years from 1st August 1990. NEWS 21
