New University Librarian Dr. Painan R. Wu has been appointed as University Librarian from 1st September 1990. Dr. Wu, aged 52, graduated from National Chengchi University in Taiwan in 1964. He then studied library science at the University of Michiga n and obtained a master's degree in the subject in 1968. His second master's degree in languages (1969) and Ph.D. degree in Middle Eastern history (1974) were obtained from the University of Utah. Dr. Wu has been director of many US libraries including the Aziz S. Atiya Library fo r Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Utah, the Donald B. Watt Library of the School of International Training, Brattleboro, and the George T. Hall Library at Bloomfield College in New Jersey. Before joining this university, Dr. Wu was director of the Frank E. Gannet Memorial Library and Media Centre of Utica College, Syracuse University for six years. New Director of EMSD Dr. Spencer Wong has been appointed to succeed Prof. Ho Kam-fai as director of the Department of Extramural Studies (EMSD) from 1st August 1990. Dr. Wong has served in the EMSD since 1967. He is strongly committed to the promotion of adult education and has been vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Association for Continuing Education since 1975. Emeritus Professor of Electronic Engineering On the recommendation of the Senate and in accordance with Statute 21 of the Un i ve r s i t y Ordinance, the Council approved the award of the title of Emeritus Professor of Electronic Engineering to Prof. Lam Yat Wah with effect from 18th October, immediately following his retirement from University service. Forty-first Congregation for the Conferment of First Degrees The University held its 41st congregation fo r the conferment of first degrees on 13th December 1990 at the University Mall. His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor of the University, Sir David Wilson, officiated at the ceremony and conferred bachelor's degrees upon 1,353 graduates, including 277 bachelors of arts, 271 bachelors of business administration, three bachelors of medical sciences, 86 bachelors of medicine and bachelors of surgery, 341 bachelors of science and 375 bachelors of social science. In the vice-chancellor's address on the occasion, Prof. Charles K. Kao stated that the University had always emphasized research along with good teaching. More than 1,100 projects were undertaken by teachers in various departments in 1989-90. involving an annual budget of some 40 million dollars. Eight new research institutes/units were also established within the University over the last three years to match the many faceted social developments in Hong Kong. All these institutes are important for Hong Kong's long-term development and will enable the University to attract, excellent teachers , research scientists and graduate students. NEWS 22
