Foundation Stone Laid for Chiangs Building The foundation stone of a new guesthouse, Chiangs Building, was laid on 20th December 1990. Dr. Chiang Chen, managing director of Chen Hsong Holdings Ltd., who generously donated $12 million for the construction of the new building, officiated at the ceremony. Chiangs Building, to be built on the eastern tip of the campus adjacent to the existin g Yali Guesthouse, will be a nine-storey building with 64 twin-bed rooms, a common room, a conference room and a reading room. The new facilities will be used to provide accommodation for visiting scholars and fellows on training programmes, mainly from China. The new building is expected to be completed in early 1992. 1990 Open Day The University Student Union and the student unions of the constitutent colleges organized the 1990 Open Day on 10th and 11th November. Th e officiating guests at the opening ceremony include d the Hon. Rosanna Tam, Legislative Councillor; Prof. Charles K. Kao, the vice-chancellor; Mr. Thomas H.C. Cheung, president of the Federation of Alumni Associations; and Miss Liu Suet-wan, president of The Chinese University Student Union. The two-day function attracted some 150,000 members of the public to the campus. Programmes of the Open Day included exhibitions on various themes, entertainment performances, video shows, an open forum on direct elections in 1991 six public lectures, and a debate on whether the last governor in Hong Kong should be a Chinese between two teams with a Legislative Councillor as guest speaker on each side. Buildings such as the University Library, Art Gallery, th e Computer Centre, the Science Centre and the Basic Medical Sciences Building, as well as student hostels were open to visitors. New Faculties to be Established Two new faculties will be established in 1991- 92: a Faculty of Education and a Faculty of Engineering. Together with the existing Faculties of Arts, Business Administration, Medicine, Science and Social Science, the University will have seven faculties. The new Faculty of Education will replac e the existing School of Education and Physical Education Unit and will comprise four departments: Department of Curriculum and Instruction, Department of Educa- tional Administration and Policy, Department of Educational Psychology, and Department of Physica l Education. The new Faculty of Engineerin g will initially comprise three departments, all to b e transferred from the existing Faculty of Science: Department of Computer Science, Department of Electronic Engineering, and Department of Information Engineering. Pending sufficient resources, a fourth department of systems engineering will be added. New Degree Programmes The University will introduce i n 1991-92 the following new programmes: NEWS - 2 3
