Wang International Surgical Symposium (14th-16th December), organized by the Department of Surgery. * Conference on Recent Developments in Statistical Research (15th-17th December), organized by the International Chinese Statistical Association and cosponsored by the Department of Statistics. * International Conference on the Relationship among Countries of the Taiwan Straits: China, Japan, Taiwan (20th-21st December), cosponsored by the Overseas Chinese Archives of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies and the Faculty of International Studies and Business of the Kyushu International University in Japan. Professorial Inaugural Lectures * Prof. Choy Chung Loong, professor of physics, delivered his inaugural lecture on 'Developments in Oriented Polymers' on 19th October 1990. * Prof. Patrick C.P. Ho, professor of surgery (ophthalmology), delivered his inaugural lecture entitled ‘Opthalmology: a Vision' on 23rd November 1990. Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Lacquerware An exhibition of 'Lacquerware from the Warring States to the Han Periods Excavated in Hubei Province', jointly presented by the University's Art Gallery and the Hubei Provincial Museum, was staged in the west wing of the Art Gallery from 2nd November 1990 to 6th January 1991. The exhibits are all archaeological finds from Hubei in the last three decades, including furniture items, daily utensils, musical instruments, weapons and burial objects. University Members Serving on External Committees The following members of the University have been appointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards and committees: * Prof. S.W. Tam, pro-vice-chancellor and dean of the Graduate School, has been appointed a member of the Council of the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong from 14th June 1990 to 19th June 1991. * Prof. C.N. Chen, professor of psychiatry, has been reappointed a member of the Occupational Therapists Board for two years from 1st August 1990. He has also been appointed a member of the Action NEWS 25
