Committee Against Narcotics for two years from 1st January 1991. * Prof. Ho Kam-fai, professor of social work, has been appointed a panel member of the Regional Services Appeals Board for three years from 10th August 1990. He has also been appointed to serve on the Pensions Appeal Panel for three years from 9th November 1990. * Dr. Serena S.H. Jin, senior lecturer in translation, has been appointed a member of the Bilingual Laws Advisory Committee for one year from 30th October 1990. * Dr. Chuang Lien-sheng, director of Yeung Shui Sang Laboratory for Thermoluminescence of Ancient Ceramics and senior research fellow of the Institute of Science and Technology, has been reappointed a member of the Radiation Board of Hong Kong for three years from 1st December 1990. * Dr. Lam Kin Che, senior lecturer in geography, has been reappointed a member of the Environmental Pollution Advisory Committee from 1st December 1990 to 31st December 1991. * Prof. Joseph C.K. Lee, professor of anatomical and cellular pathology, has been reappointed a member of the Medical Development Advisory Committee for one year from 1st December 1990. * Prof. T.E. Oh, dean of medicine and professor of anaesthesia and intensive care, and Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, associate dean of medicine and professor of surgery, have been appointed to serve on the Hospital Authority from 1st December 1990 for terms of one and three years respectively. Service in Memory of Dr. Ch'ien Mu Dr. Ch'ien Mu, the founder and first president of New Asia College, passed away on 30th August 1990 in his residence in Taipei at the age of 96. A memorial service for Dr. Ch'ien was held on 30th September at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hall on the campus. Attended by over 300 people, the service was organized by the University and other local educational and cultural organizations. Dr. Ch'ien's wife, Ms. Hu Mei-chi from Taiwan, and his two sons, two daughters and two grandsons from mainland China were invited to attend the service. At the ceremony, speeches in memory of Dr. Ch'ien were made by Prof. Charles K. Kao, the vice- chancellor; Prof. T.B. Lin, head of New Asia College; the representative from the New Asia Educational and Cultural Association; the chairman of the New Asia Alumni Association; and Dr. Gungwu Wang from the University of Hong Kong. Prof. Ambrose King, the pro-vice-chancellor, also gave an account of Dr. Ch'ien's life and achievements. At the end of the service, Mr. Ch'ien Xing, second son of Dr. Ch'ien, thanked the congregation on behalf of Dr. Ch'ien's family. In the vice-chancellor's speech, Prof. Kao praised the monumental contributions that Dr. Ch'ien had made in education and the promotion of traditional Chinese culture. He also described Dr. Ch'ien's close association with the University and with New Asia College in particular over the last 40 years. A great historian and Confucian scholar, Dr. Ch'ien will be forever remembered by his friends, students and members of the University community. Obituary Prof. Lien-Sheng Yang, Harvard-Yenching Professor of Chinese History Emeritus at Harvard University and a member of this university's Advisory Board on Humanities, passed away on 16th November 1990 at his home in Arlington, Massachusetts, USA. Prof. Yang was born in China in 1914 and received the AB degree from Tsing Hua University in 1937. He furthered his studies at Harvard University and received the AM degree in 1942 and the Ph.D. in 1946. He joined the Harvard faculty in 1947 and retired in 1980 as Harvard-Yenching Professor of Chinese History. Internationally known for his scholarly criticism and quick wit, fondly remembered by generations of students as a kind teacher, Prof. Yang was one of the pioneering scholars who helped shape American sinology. Prof. Yang had been a member of The Chinese University's Advisory Board on Humanities since the University's inauguration, and was conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws by the University in 1976.
