News in Brief Council Appointments Pro-Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ambrose Y. C. King has been reappointed pro-vice- chancellor o f the University for two years from 11th October 1991. Dean o f the Graduate School Prof. S. W. Tam has been reappointed dean of the Grad uate School for one year from 1st September 1991. Members o f the University Honoured Three members o f the University were on the Queen's Birthday Honours List 1991 issued in June. Prof. the Hon. Wang Gungwu, a member o f the University Council, was made a Commander of the Most Excellent Order o f the British Empire (CBE). The Hon. Chung Pui Lam, a member o f the University Council, and the Hon. Andrew W. F. Wong, lecturer in government and public administration, were made Officers o f the Most Excellent Order o f the British Empire (QBE). New Structure f o r Academic L in k Activities The University reaffirms the policy o f con­ tinuing to expand academic links with major centres of excellence worldwide. To facilitate such an expan­ sion, a Committee on Academic Links was set up in June 1991 to replace the Senate Committee on Inter­ national Programmes. The new committee is chaired by Prof. Ambrose King, the pro-vice-chancellor, who w ill provide guidance and supervision for the develop­ ment o f the University's academic link activities. The composition o f the committee is as follows: Chairman: Prof. Ambrose Y. C. King Members: Prof. S.W. Tam Prof. C.N. Chen Dr. H.H. Ho Dr. K.H. Lee Prof. Kenneth Young Prof. H.C. Kuan Ex-officio Members: Registrar Director of the Hong Kong Institute o f Asia- Pacific Studies Director of the Office of International Studies Programmes Director o f the Chinese Language Centre One to two members to be co-opted by the committee A ll members other than the ex-officio members have been appointed from 19th June 1991 to 31st July 1993. A new Office of Academic Links has also been established with staff redeployed from the University Secretariat and the Office o f International Studies Programme, to provide better coordinated and cost- effective administrative support services to various departments involved in the development o f academic link activities. The director o f the new office is Mr. Mark Sheldon. The two associate directors are Dr. C. B. Luen and Dr. Y.F. Law. Apart from the overall coordination of academic link activities, Dr. Luen also supports China link activities and Dr. Law the international Asian Studies Programme and other international link activities. Donations to Support the University's Academic Development * The U n i v e r s i t y r ec en t l y r ece i ved some HK$1,000,000 worth o f new computer equipment from Sun Microsystems. The donation comprises one SPARC server 330, three SPARC station 1 + workstations and two SPARC station SLC workstations, all manufactured NEWS 16
