* The Southeast Asian Mathematical Society organized a conference on 'Ordered Structures and Alegbra for Computer Languages' from 26th to 29th June 1991. The conference was cosponsored by the Hong Kong Mathematical Society and The Chinese University. * The Centre for Chinese Archaeology and Art, together with the Zhongshan University in Guangzhou and the Shenzhan Museum, organized an 'In te r national Conference o f Prehistory in the South China Sea Area' on 28th and 29th June 1991. * The University's Department o f Sociology and the Hong Kong Institute o f Asia-Pacific Studies, and the Japan Association for Urban Sociology join tly organized a seminar on ‘Trends in Urban Sociology: Hong Kong and Japan' from 8th to 10th July 1991. * The Hong Kong Institute o f Asia-Pacific Studies held a symposium on 'Industrial Policy in Hong Kong: An Interdisciplinary Study' on 12th and 13th July 1991. * The Department o f Biology and the UNESCO jo in tly organized a workshop on ‘Culture Collection and Breeding o f Edible Mushrooms' from 14th to 20th July 1991. Exh ibition o f Duan Inkstones An exhibition o f ‘The Quintessential Purple Stone: Duan Inkstones through the Ages', join tly pre­ sented by the U n ive rs ity 's A rt Gallery and the Guangdong Provincial Museum, was staged at the west wing of the A rt Gallery from 29th June to 8th September. Exhibits included some 120 pieces o f Duan inkstones from the Tang to the Qing dynasties collected by the Guangdong Provincial Museum, and other pieces from public and private collections in Guangdong and Hong Kong. Duan inkstones are made from the Duan stone, which is well-known for its fine, smooth and compact qualities. The seven pieces o f pre-Ming inkstones in the exhibition came from archaeological excavations. The other some 100 items are o f the Ming and Qing periods. Quite a number o f them also carry literary inscriptions, a common characteristics o f all objects for the scholar's studio. College Graduations Some 1,300 students graduated from the Univer­ sity's four constituent colleges this year, and college graduation ceremonies were held in early June on the campus. United College The 1991 graduation ceremony o f United College was held on 1st June. Mr. Christopher Wigan, chief executive of Standard Chartered Asia, Ltd., and Mr. Thomas Cheung, chairman of the alumni association o f the college, officiated at the ceremony and ad­ dressed the graduates. Over 1,000 guests attended the function. Shaw College Shaw College turned out its second batch of graduates this year. O fficiating at the graduation ceremony on 1st June was Prof. D. C. Lau, senior college tutor, who, together with Prof. C. N. Chen, the college head, and other college fellows, also presented certificates o f merit to prize winners. NEWS 20
