Profiles Dr. Stephen Joseph King-Chong Huang Lectu re r in Physiology Born in Calcutta, India, Dr. Stephen K.C. Huang came to Hong Kong at the age o f seven. He attended local schools and graduated from Hong Kong Baptist College in 1984. Upon graduation he served as a teacher and received formal teacher training at the Northcote College o f Education. He then went to the UK in 1986 for further studies in biochemistry at the Insti tute o f Science and Technology o f the Univer sity o f Manchester. He returned to Hong Kong in 1987 and received his Ph.D. training in physiology at the University o f Hong Kong. Dr. Huang joined The Chinese University o f Hong Kong in 1990 as assistant lecturer in physiology and was promoted to lecturer in 1991. Dr. Huang's main research interest is the study o f ion transport mechanisms in exocrine tissues and reproductive organs. Dr. Brian W.T. Lo Lecturer, Department o f Mathematics Dr. Brian W.T. Lo graduated from the Uni­ versity o f Hong Kong w ith a BA degree (First Class Honours) in Mathematics. He spent one year at The Chinese University o f Hong Kong as teaching assistant in the Department o f Mathe­ matics while enrolled as a graduate student in the M .Phil. programme. He continued his studies in the Department o f Pure Mathematics at Brown University, where he received an M.Sc. degree in 1988. He subsequently obtained his doctoral degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 1990. His research interests focus on areas such as the representation theory of in fin ite dimensional Lie algebras, algebraic structures rising from non-linear integrable equations, quantum groups, as well as super- manifolds and the representation theory o f super groups. He joined the University's Depart ment o f Mathematics in September 1990. Apart from teaching and research, Dr. Lo is an enthusiastic violinist who has played in many orchestras, including the orchestras o f the various universities he attended, and the Hong Kong Youth Symphony Orchestra. A t present Dr. Lo plays w ith the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra. He also enjoys playing chamber music with smaller groups o f musicians. PROFILES 22 -
