Guesthouse Support System During its firs t year, O A L concentrated its e ffo rts on the development o f the infrastructure fo r in te rna tiona l exchanges and conferences, most n o ta b ly the deve lopm en t o f the U n iv e rs ity Guesthouse System . The O A L director also serves concurrently as the supervisor o f the U n ive r sity Guesthouse System and has been g iv ing attention to the re structuring o f the system, and the tendering and staffing required fo r two new guest houses —the Chan K w a n -tu n g B u ild in g and the Chiang's Building. These facilities are now open and are a valuable asset to all those involved in ex change, seminar and conference activities. Plans fo r the Future The O A L is currently located in the Tsang Shiu T im Bu ild ing on the campus o f U n ited College, adjacent to the O ffice o f In te r national Studies Programmes. The d ire c to r and his secretary w ill remain at United College un til the opening o f the University Library Extension when most units as sociated w ith O A L w ill be re located to the eighth floo r o f the new building. The office w ill then be in close p roxim ity to the new Centre fo r Hong Kong-American E d u c a tio n Exchanges and the Universities Service Centre. In the immediate future the o ff ic e w i l l d ir e c t its e ffo r ts towards: * providing additional assistance to departments and units which seek to initiate and implement exchange and linkage agrements w ith counterparts w o rld wide; * suppo rting the opening and development o f the new Centre fo r Hong Kong-American Edu cation Exchanges, including a new American studies library to be housed in the basement o f the University Library (o fficia l opening scheduled fo r spring 1993); * c o n tin u in g to pursue in te r- in s titu tio n a l agreements fo r student and faculty exchange; * implementing a major endowed exchange and research programme between CUH K and the University o f Hawaii at Manoa. * assisting in the development o f the new research and faculty exchange programme between C U H K and Na tional Taiwan University; * p ro v id in g im p roved services fo r departments and units re ga rd in g bo th app roved and prospective academic links pro grammes; * completing the reorganization process o f the University Guest house System and opening the two new guesthouses. □ 16
