The new building w ill have a total floor area of 5,000 square metres and is expected to be com­ pleted by the end of 1993. There w ill be a lecture hall, classrooms, workshops, offices and covered carparks, mainly for the use of the departments of geography, psychology, and architecture. Members o f the University Honoured * Prof. Charles K. Kao, the vice-chancellor, has been awarded the Gold Medal of the International Society for Optical Engineering for 1992. He was also elected a Fellow of the Academia Sinica, Taipei, on 9th July 1992. * Two staff members of the University were on the Queen's Birthday Honours List 1992 issued in June. Prof. S.W. Tam, pro-vice-chancellor, was made Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). Prof. David Gwilt of the Department of Music was made Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). * Prof. S.T. Chang, chairman of the Department of Biology, has been elected a Fellow of the World Academy of Productivity Science. * Prof. C.N. Yang, Distinguished Professor-at- Large, received an honorary degree of Doctor of Science from Moscow State University in May 1992. Prof. Yang was also elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London in June 1992. D o n a tio n f r o m the C r o u c h e r F o u n d a tio n f o r Research The Trustees of the Croucher Foundation re cently approved donations totalling HK$ 1,400,000 to support two research projects undertaken by staff members of the University: * HK$ 1,000,000 for a three-year research project on 'Synthesis and biological evaluation of potential glycosidase inhibitors and anti-cancer agents from (-)-quinic acid' by Dr. Tony K.M. Shing of the Department of Chemistry. * HK$400 , 000 for a two-year research project on ‘Biological detoxification of rapeseed meal by edible fungi' by Dr. Yum-shing Wong of the Department of Biology. More Funds f o r Research on China's Economic Development Three Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Hong Kong donated HK$500,000 to the University to support research into the economic reform and development of China. The donation from Messrs. Wong Mau Hung, Hong Wing Cheung and Lam Yiu Ming w ill be used to set up a permanent fund to finance the activities of the China's Reform and Development Research Pro gramme of the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies (HKIAPS). One such activity is a conference on China's regional economic development to be held in May 1993. The HKIAPS has been studying the process, content, and results of China's political, economic and social reforms, trying to analyse different reform proposals and strategies and to establish a set of development models for China. Current research projects which involve scho lars from China include studies on the productivity, efficiency and reform of China's economy, China's regional economic development, and the economic reforms and open-door policy in Guangdong. Council Appointments * Mrs. Alice K.Y. Lam has been reappointed by the University Council as Treasurer of the University for a period of three years from 1st July 1992. * Prof. S.W. Tam has been reappointed pro-vice- chancellor of the University for two years from 1st August 1992, and as dean of the Graduate School for one year from 1st September 1992. * Prof. P.C. Leung has been appointed head of New Asia College for four years from 1st August 1992, succeeding Prof. T.B. Lin. * Prof. C.Y. Lee has been reappointed head of United College for three years from 1st August 1992. * Prof. H.C. Kuan has been appointed University Dean of Students for one year from 1st August 1992, succeeding Prof. C.Y. Lee. Professorial Appointments The University has appointed the following new professors: * Prof. Kenneth Raymond has been appointed professor of pharmacy from 1st June 1992. NEWS 18
