Born in the UK, Prof. Raymond graduated from the University of London and ob tained his degrees of B.Pharm., M.Pharm. and Ph.D. in 1966, 1968 and 1977 respectively. He started his teaching career in 1968 as assistant lecturer in the School of Pharmacy of the University of London and was promoted to lecturer in 1970. In 1977, Prof. Raymond joined Victoria College of Pharmacy in Australia as senior lecturer and served there for 15 years before coming to Hong Kong. He was con currently head of the college's School of Pharmacy Practice from 1987 to 1992. Prof. Raymond is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain and the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia. He is also a registered pharmacist of the Pharmacy Board of Victoria, Australia. Prof. Raymond is married, with a son and a daughter. * Prof. Chan Hok-lam has been appointed professor of history from 1st August 1992. Born in 1938 in Hong Kong, Prof. Chan read history and Chinese at the University of Hong Kong and obtained his BA and MA degrees in 1961 and 1963 respectively. He furthered his studies in history at Princeton University in USA and re ceived his Ph.D. degree in 1967. Prof. Chan has held various appointments both within and outside USA since 1967 , acquiring exten sive teaching and research experience. He taught at the University of Auckland, New Zealand for one year before taking up the post of research associate for the Ming Biographical History Project at Columbia University in 1969. In 1972, Prof. Chan joined the University of Washington in Seattle and served there for 20 years, first as associate professor, then as pro fessor of Chinese history and chair of the Chinese Studies Programme of the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. During periods of leave, he held appointments as research fellow and visiting professor at different leading universities in the States, Australia and Taiwan. Prof. Chan has also served as a member of the Joint Committee on Chinese Studies of the Amercian Council o f Learned Societies/Social Sciences Research Council; external examiner of the Department of Chinese, University of Hong Kong, and of the Department of Far Eastern History, Australian National University; and external assessor of the Department of Chinese Studies, University of Malaya. He is currently external assessor of the matriculation examination syllabus in Chinese history, Hong Kong Examination Authority, and member of the panel on Chinese Studies of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation. Prof. Chan is married, with two sons and a daughter. New Faculty Deans The following academics have been elected/ re-elected dean of various faculties for a term of three years: * Dr. H.H. Ho as dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1st August 1992. * Prof. A.K.C. L i as dean of the Faculty of Medicine from 1st July 1992. * Prof. Rance P.L. Lee as dean of the Faculty of Social Science from 1st August 1992. University Members serving on Externa l Committees The following members of the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards and committees: * Prof. Yeung Yue-man, professor of geography, has been reappointed a member of the Metro Planning Committee for two years from 1st April 1992. * Prof. T.B. Lin, professor of economics, has been reappointed a member of the A ir Transport Licensing Authority for two years from 16th May 1992. * Prof. S.W. Tam, pro-vice-chancellor and dean of the Graduate School, has been appointed a mem ber o f the Hong Kong Council fo r Academic Accreditation for two years from 8th June 1992. * Prof. David C. Anderson, professor of medi cine, has been appointed a member of the Pharmacy and Poisons Board for three years from 1st July 1992. * Dr. Chan Kai-ming, reader in orthopaedics and traumatology, has been appointed a Board Mem ber of the Hong Kong Sports Institute from 1st July 1992 to 31st March 1994. * Dr. Ho Hin-hung, senior lecturer in physics, has been reappointed a member of the Board of Governors and the Council of Hong Kong Baptist College from 1st July 1992 to 30th June 1995. * Prof. Rance P.L. Lee, professor of sociology, has been appointed as Non-official Justice of the Peace for Hong Kong from 7th July 1992. NEWS 19
