* Dr. Ng Lee-Ming, Registrar of the University, has been reappointed a member of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority for one year from 1st August 1992. * Prof. Leung Ping-chung, professor of orthopae dics and traumatology, has been appointed a member of the Occupational Safety and Health Council for three years from 22nd August 1992. Wei L u n Lectures Prof. Peter Townsend, professor of experi mental physics from the University of Sussex, gave a lecture on 14th May as the University's Wei Lun Visiting Professor. In his lecture entitled ‘The Need for Imper fections', Prof. Townsend explained how perfect materials do not, and cannot exist. He pointed out some common features of imperfections in different materials and explained how imperfections could be controlled and engineered to advantage. Common examples of defect-controlled processes and devices included, he said, semi-conductors, the photographic process, TV phosphors, hardness, solid state lasers, and optical fibres. In addition to giving a public lecture on imper fections, he conducted two seminars during his stay, one on optical effects of ion implantation, and the other on thermoluminesence spectra in physics and geology. 1992 Graduates In the 1991-92 academic year, a total of 1,488 students from six faculties completed their full-time undergraduate studies: 252 from the Faculty of Arts, 307 from the Faculty of Business Administration, 177 from the Faculty of Engineering, 132 from the Faculty of Medicine, 250 from the Faculty of Science, and 370 from the Faculty of Social Science. The part-time degree programmes on the other hand produced 130 graduates: 20 from the Business Administration Programme, 36 from the Chinese and English Programme, nine from the Music Programme, 39 from the Primary Education Programme, and 26 from the Social Work Programme. In addition, 434 students from the Faculty of Education completed their postgraduate studies leading to the Diploma in Education. Of the lot, 75 are from the one-year full-time programme, 143 from the two-year part-time evening programme, and 216 from the two-year part-time day programme. College Graduations Some 1,500 students graduated from the Univer sity's four constituent colleges this year, and college graduation ceremonies were held in late May and early June on the campus. Shaw College Shaw College held its third graduation cer emony on 30th May. Officiating at the ceremony were Prof. Chia-wei Woo, vice-chancellor of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Prof. C.N. Chen, head of Shaw College. They also presented certificates of merit to prize winners. United College The 1992 graduation ceremony o f United College was held on 6th June. Prof. Wang Gungwu, vice-chancellor of the University of Hong Kong, and Mr. Thomas Cheung, chairman of the alumni associa tion of the college, addressed the graduates of the college as guests of honour. New Asia College The 41st farewell assembly in honour of the 1991-92 graduates of New Asia College was held in the morning of 7th June. Prof. T.B. Lin, the college head, officiated at the ceremony. Mr. H.C. Tang, chairman of the college board of trustees, was invited to address the graduates. Group photos were taken after the ceremony at the college gymnasium. Chung Chi College Chung Chi College's 38th valedictory service took place on the afternoon of 7th June in the college chapel. The Rev. Lee Ching Chee, associate general secretary of the Hong Kong Council of the Church of Christ in China, was the guest speaker. A tea reception for guests and parents was then organized at the college staff club and chapel lounge.
