— A seminar on 'Sexual Harassment in the Workplace' organized by the HKIAPS Gender Research Programme on 6th June 1992. — 'Conference on Relationship between Taiwan and the Mainland' jointly organized by the HKIAPS Japan and Asia-Pacific Development Research Programme, the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong, the Taiwan Study Society of Beijing and the Twenty-first Century Foundation of Taiwan on 15th and 16th July 1992. — 'Conference on Productivity, Efficiency and Reform in China's Economy , cosponsored by the HKIAPS China's Reform and Develop ment Research Programme, the Department of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, and the Institute of Quantitative and Technical Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 3rd to 6th August 1992. — ‘International Symposium on Informal Politics in East Asia' jointly organized by the HKIAPS China's Reform and Development Research Programme and the Pacific Rim Research Pro gramme of the University of California on 17th and 18th August 1992. * The Department of Surgery hosted the fourth World Congress of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery from 7th to 11th June 1992. * The Department of Journalism and Communi cation and the World Association for Christian Communication jointly organized an international conference on 'The Right to Communicate' on 17th and 18th June 1992. * The MBA Programmes, the MBA Alumni Association, the Three-Year MBA Association and the Asia-Pacific Institute of Business co-sponsored a conference on 'Global Business Opportunities for Entrepreneurs' on 11th July. * The University organized a conference entitled 'Programme of Research Utilization' from 3th to 5th August 1992. Summer Programme on Comparative Business: The Asia-Pacific Perspective The O ffice o f International Studies Pro grammes, CUHK and the School o f Business Administration and School for Summer and Con tinuing Education of Georgetown University jointly organized a five-week programme in comparative business for 16 Georgetown University students. With a special emphasis on the Asia-Pacific market, the programme started on 6th July and was conducted by experienced local academics as well as eminent members of the business community. Apart from classroom activities, there were guest lectures by managers, visits to various representative businesses, and field trips to Shenzhen and Guangzhou to visit joint ventures and state-owned enterprises. Partici­ pants were given ample opportunities to interact with local practitioners of business and to appreciate cul­ tural differences in business management skills. Victory f o r C UH K Debaters The University's Cantonese debating team cap tured the champion trophy in the 1992 intervarsity debating contest held between The Chinese Univer sity and the University of Macau on 30th May at New Town Plaza, Sha Tin. Mr. Yip Kam Leung on the CUHK team was also selected best speaker in the contest. Speaking for the motion 'Beauty contests should be abolished', the CUHK team won by a margin of two to one after an hour of heatea debate. The contest is an annual event organized by the two universities to promote cultural exchange and to stimulate student interest in debating activities. A r t Gallery Exhibitions * F ine A rts Students G raduation E x h ib itio n — The exhibition was held from 23rd May to 21st June. Exhibits included Chinese paintings, Chinese cal ligraphy, seal carving, oil paintings, print-making and sculptures, all produced by the 18 graduates of the Department of Fine Arts. * Letters o f P rom inent Figures in M odern China — The exhibition was mounted from 1st July to 27th September. On display were letters of 100 prominent figures such as Tang Tingshu, Zhang Yinhuan, Li Hong-zhang, Liang Qichao, Luo Zhengyu and Wu Dacheng. The exhibits were selected from the ‘Sheng Xuanhuai Archive' of the Art Gallery Collection. NEWS 21
