Di nner Pa r t y to Celebrate the 70th B i r t hday o f Prof . C.N. Yang Over 200 guests including members of the Univer sity, overseas scholars and local dignitaries attended a birthday dinner party held in honour of Prof. Chen Ning Yang, Distinguished Professor-at-Large of the University, at Hotel Furama Kempinski on 5th August. Born in 1922 in the Province of Anhui, China, Prof. Yang was educated at National Southwest Associated Universities in Kun ming during the Second World War. He then won a scholarship to the U n ive rsity o f Chicago, where he read physics and obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1948. Eight years later he and Prof. T.D. Lee jointly published the results of their research, pointing out the possibility of parity non-conservation in weak decays. For this work they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. In recent years Prof. Yang has been active in pro moting Sino- American aca demic ex change and the develop ment o f sci ence and technology in China. He accepted the ap pointment of Distinguished Professor-at-Large at The Chinese University in 1986 and has since made significant contributions to the University's teaching and research activities. Before dinner started, Mr. David W.K. Sin, member of the University Council and chairman of the organizing committee for Prof. Yang's 70th birthday celebration, represented all guests to present a birthday gift to Prof. Yang, which included a cry stal and a couplet in Chinese calligraphy composed and written by Prof. Jao Tsung-i, emeritus professor of Chinese language and literature. After the third course had been served, Prof. Chan Yau-wa, emeritus professor of physics, de livered a speech praising the academic achievements of Prof. Yang and proposed a toast to his health and well-being. After dinner Prof. Yang gave a vote of thanks, which was followed by a 50-minute talk accompanied by a slide show to review significant events and people in his life and work. On the same occasion, contributions were invited for the establishment of the C.N. Yang V isiting Pro fessor Fund to sponsor w o rld re nowned phy sicists to visit the University and to give lectures and conduct re search at the Physics De partment. □ NEWS 22
