B o rn i n Ma l a y s i a, Prof. N y aw was educated i n H o ng K o ng and graduated B.S.Sc. f r om T he Chinese U n i v e r s i ty in 1967. H e t h en p u r s u ed postgraduate studies in N o r th Am e r i ca and obtained an M A degre f r om V a n d e r b i l t U n i v e r s i ty i n 1969 , an M B A degre f r om the U n i v e r s i ty o f B r i t i sh C o l u m b ia in 1973, and his Ph.D. degre f r om S i m on Fraser U n i v e r s i ty i n 1977. B e f o re j o i n i ng T he Chinese U n i v e r s i ty of H o ng K o ng i n 1977 as lecturer i n general business ma n a g eme nt a nd personnel ma n a g eme n t , Prof. N y aw h ad taught i n S i m on Fraser U n i v e r s i ty a nd N a n y a ng U n i v e r s i ty i n Singapore. Prof. N y aw has served th e U n i v e r s i ty f or 15 years and was p r omo t ed to senior lecturer i n 1983 and reader i n 1987. • Dr . Phili p Jame s Johnso n has been appointed professor of clinical oncology f r om 1st Oc t o b er 1992. D r. J o h n s on g r a d u a t ed M . B. C h . B . i n 1 9 72 f r om t he M e d i c al S c h o ol o f Manchester Un i v e r s i t y . A f t er one year o f internship, he s e r v ed as senior house o f f i c er at f o ur m a j or postgraduate centres i n L o n d on a nd passed the M R CP e x am i n a t i on i n 1974. I n 1975 he began his attachment to the L i v er U n it at K i n g 's C o l l e ge Hospital, L o n d o n, where he gained his initial training in hepatology and an introduction to clinical research. D r. Johnso n has extensive experience treating liver, gastroenterologica l a nd pancreatic diseases, a nd teaching postgraduate courses in these subjects. H e obtained hi s MD f r om the U n i v e r s i ty of Manchester and became F R CP i n 1991. B e f o re j o i n i ng this university, D r . Johnson w o r k ed w i th the Institute o f L i v er Studies, K i n g 's Co l l e ge H o s p i t al and K i n g 's C o l l e ge S c h o ol o f M e d i c i ne a nd D e n t i s t ry as consultant physician. D r. Johnson's ma j or research interest are the consequences o f and factors i n f l u e n c i ng ma l i g n a nt change i n patients w i th chronic l i v er diseases, p a n c r e a t ic c a r c i n o m a, a n d m o re r e c e n t l y, a u t o i mm u ne c h r o n ic hepatitis.
