Prof . Mar y Snel-Hornby , professor of translation studies and head of the Institute f or Translation and Interpreting at the U n i v e r s i ty of V i e n n a, gave t wo p u b l ic lectures on 4 t h a n d 1 1 t h D e c e m b er respectively. Her first lecture entitled ' T r a n s l a t i on as a C u l t u r al Shock: D i a g n o s iand T h e r a p y' was about translation as m i s c ommu n i c a t i o n . In the lecture, she investigated authentic examples of f a i l ed translations that created distorted messages, analysed t he factors i n v o l v ed i n such distortion, a nd suggested t r a n s l a t i on strategies f o r r e n d e r i ng t he o r i g i n a l ly intended message. In her second lecture entitled ' T he U n f a m i l i ar I ma g e: M e t a p h or as a P r o b l em i n T r a n s l a t i o n ' , she e x p l a i n ed w h y metaphors we re always d i f f i c u lt to translate, and p o i n t ed out that metaphor as a translation p r o b l em s h o u ld be seen as a cultural p h e n ome n oand not me r e ly as a l e x i c al issue. H e stated that the g l o b al marketplace after the C o ld W ar was tripolar i n character, the ma j or e c o n om ic centres b e i ng We s t e rn Europe, the A s i an r i m, and N o r th Ame r i c a. T he g l o b al marketplace o f the 1990s w o u ld be characterized b y a d y n a m ic tension b e t we en this regionalization and the pressures o f g l o b a l i z a t i on resulting f r om t he rise o f transnational enterprises. I n the l o ng run, he believed, g o v e r nme nt policies w o u ld be affected and the balance of p o w er w o u ld t ip i n f a v o ur o f the private sector. The L i and Fung Lecture on Negotiation Skills Prof. H o w a rd R a i f fa f r om H a r v a rd U n i v e r s i ty talked on 'Preparing f or Ne g o t i a t i o n s ' o n 10th N o v e m b er at the H o ng K o ng C o n v e n t i on and E x h i b i t i on Centre as the guest speaker o f the L i and F u ng L e c t u re organized b y the M BA P r o g r ammes o f the U n i v e r s i t y. C u r r e n t ly F r a nk P. Rams ey Professor o f Managerial E c o n om i c s, Prof. R a i f fa has been teaching at the H a r v a rd Business S c h o ol since 1957. A F e l l ow o f the E c o n ome t r ic Society, the A m e r i c an Institute f or Decision Sciences and the A s s o c i a t i on f o r Public P o l i cy A n a l y s i and Ma n a g eme n t , Prof. R a i f fa has received n u m e r o us a w a r ds a n d prizes f o r h is outstanding c o n t r i b u t i o ns i n the area o f r i sk a n a l y s i s, d e c i s i on analysi a n d n e g o t i a t i on studies. Wang Distinguished International Professor Prof. Charles A. Ingene, N o r d s t o rm Professor of Retail M a r k e t i n g, U n i v e r s i ty of Wa s h i n g t o n, visited the University as W i l s on T.S. W a ng D i s t i n g u i s h ed International Professor f r om September to D e c emb er 1992. Prof. Ingene specializes i n spatial ma r k e t i n g, retail m a r k e t i ng and t he organization o f d i s t r i b u t i on channels, and has p u b l i s h ed over ah u n d r ed articles and b o o ks on these subjects. He also serves as editor o f the Journal of Retailing, one o f the ma j or academic journals in the ma r k e t i ng profession, and consults f or m a ny business organizations i n the U n i t ed States. D u r i ng his visit, Prof. Ingene c o n d u c t ed a course entitled ' S em i n ar i n ma r k e t i n g: retailing strategy' f o r the U n i v e r s i t y 's Three-Year M BA P r o g r amme and gave thre seminars, t w o f o r the staf and one f o r P h . D. students of the F a c u l ty of Business A dm i n i s t r a t i o n . H e was also i n v o l v ed in research on the distribution channels in H o ng K o n g 's retail business.
