T h at she was able to t u rn adversity t i me and again to her advantage speaks clearly f o r her extraordinary staying p o w er a nd courage. T he secret o f her success lies as m u ch i n he r sincerity t owa r ds people as her extraordinary insight. B a ck i n the 60s w h en she was teaching at St. Stephen's G i r l s' Co l l e g e, she became aware that her .students we re totally ignorant about relationship b e t we en the t wo sexes, thus unable t o ma ke w e l l - f o u n d e choices on love, marriage as w e l as child-bearing. She i n t r o d u c ed sex education into the c u r r i c u l um and taught her students h ow to cope w i th adolescence. N ot o n ly was she a pioneer i n i n t r o d u c i ng sex education into the school c u r r i c u l um, she also d e v o t ed herself t o t he p r omo t i on o f f a m i ly p l a n n i ng i n the territory i n the 70s, p l a y i ng active a nd leadership roles i n the International Planned Parenthood Federation and the F a m i ly P l a n n i ng A s s o c i a t i on o f H o ng Ko n g. T h o u gh her c h i l d h o od d r e am t o be a social w o r k er d i d not materialize, her d e d i c a t i on to p r omo t i ng the w e l l - b e i ng o f the c o mm u n i ty had never wa v e r e d. Since she j o i n ed t he b a nk i n the 70s, she also c omm i t t ed herself to serve on a variety o f c omm i t t e es i n the f i n a n c i al as w e ll as the p u b l ic sector. These include amo ng others: Standing C o mm i s s i on o n C i v il Service Salaries a nd Co n d i t i o ns o f Service; Securities C omm i s s i o n; the C omm i t t ee o n U n it Trusts; t he C o mm i t t ee on Takeovers and Me r g e r s; a nd Securities and Futures Ap p e a ls Panel. A p a rt f r om these, ou t o f her concern f or y o u ng people and d e v o t i on to the d e v e l o pme nt of h u m an resources in H o ng K o n g, she has since the late 70s participated i n the d e v e l o pme nt o f higher education at T he Chinese Un i v e r s i ty o f H o ng K o ng and other l o c al tertiary institutions. She has served at different times as treasure o f t he U n i v e r s i t y, c h a i r man o f the Finance C omm i t t e e, a truste o f the Un i v e r s i ty S t a ff Superannuation Scheme and c h a i r man o f the A d v i s o ry B o a rd o f the T w o - Y e ar M BA P r o g r amme. I n these capacities, he has always tried her best to p r omo te the w e l l - b e i ng of the Un i v e r s i ty as w e ll as its staff. A s an adviser to the MB A p r o g r amme, f or e x amp l e, she has a l wa ys been i n v o l v ed in almost every aspect o f p l a n n i ng and personally f o l l o w ed t h r o u gh al the ma j or decisions. A s a c o u n c il memb e r, M r s. L a m has been i n s t r ume n t al i n securing some very ma j or donations to the Un i v e r s i t y. She was also instrumental i n the establishment o f T he Chinese U n i v e r s i ty o f H o ng K o ng F o u n d a t i on a nd the H o ng K o ng Institute o f B i o t e c h n o l o g y . I n recent years, M r s. L am has also ma de significant contributions towards the f o u n d i ng and d e v e l o pme nt o f the H o ng K o ng Un i v e r s i ty o f Science and T e c h n o l o gy as i t s c o u n c il memb e r. In H o ng K o n g, wh e re the East meets the We st and wh e re the o ld and the new converge, i t is not a l that easy to realize o n e 's potentials w i t h o ut constraints. It is even mo re d i f f i c u lt f o r a w o m an t o carve out a career o f her o w n. M r s. A l i ce L am was, h owe v e r, able to o v e r c ome her d i f f i c u l t i es and f u r t h e r mo re volunteer her service to the c o mm u n i ty i n various ways. M r.
