W a n g , O B E , J P It can hardly be denied that H o ng K o n g 's p h e n ome n al e c o n om ic success over the past 40 years mu st be attributed to the magic f o r mu la o f 'timeliness, g e o g r a p h i c a l advantages and solidarity’,as the Chinese saying has it. M o re specifically speaking, H o ng K o n g 's ever-increasing industrial output c o u ld not have been achieved w i t h o ut its quality h u m an resources. A s a man w i th clear and admirable insight, M r. W i l s on T. S. Wa ng set h i ms e lf the task, as early as i n the 50s, o f d e v e l o p i ng h uman resources and p a v i ng the w ay f o r e c o n om ic expansion i n H o ng K o n g. M r. W a ng has since his early c h i l d h o od been fascinated w i th the H o o v er D a m, w h i ch was then one o f the engineering marvels. I n fact, he had set his sights quite early on a career i n hydroelectric engineering. A nd indeed, things d id turn out the w ay he wanted. So on after he graduated f r om the Un i v e r s i ty o f H o ng K o ng i n 1941 ma j o r i ng in electrical engineering, he j o i n ed the W h a m p oa D o c k. B u t H o ng K o ng soon came under Japanes occupation, and M r . W a ng was forced to m o ve to Gu i l i n, wh e re he c o n t i n u ed to w o rk i n the same f i e id at the Ma t e r i al C omm i s s i o n. U p on his return to H o ng K o ng i n 1948, h o w e v e r, it d a w n ed upon h im that tapping h uman resources was mo re urgent than d e v e l o p i ng hydroelectric p o w e r. M r. W a ng thus we nt i n to language education and soon established his o wn school. Thre years later. N ew M e t h od Co l l e ge was f o u n d ed ——albeiton a modest scale at this initial stage. Some 4 0 years later, the college has expanded considerably , boasting several campuse i n H o ng K o ng and K o w l o o n, and p r o v i d i ng comprehensive education r a n g i ng f r om kindergarten to p r i ma ry school, secondary school as well as ma t r i c u l a t i on courses, w i th b o th arts and science streams . 4 44TH CONGREGATION
