CITATIONS Prof. T s ui was born i n Shanghai and received his education i n H o ng K o n g. He read b i o l o gy at both undergraduate (B.Sc. 1972) and postgraduate ( M . P h i l. 1974) levels at T he Chinese Un i v e r s i ty o f H o ng K o n g. He was already k n o wn f or his d e t e r m i n a t i on in his approach and c h a rm in dealing w i th people a r o u nd h im — qualities w h i ch are essential i n his future research w h i ch requires perseverance a nd leadership i n a ma j or research project. A f t er he had f i n i s h ed his d o c t o r al studies at the U n i v e r s i ty o f Pittsburgh, e mo v ed to Canada i n 1981 to w o rk w i th D r. Jack R i o r d an and D r. M a n u el B u c h w a ld at the Ho s p i t al f o r Sick C h i l d r en i n T o r o n t o. I n 1983, Prof. T s ui j o i n ed the genetics department and research institute at the Ho s p i t al f o r Sick C h i l d r en and was appointed to Sellers Ch a ir in Cy s t ic FibrosiResearch in 1989. He also holds concurrent appointments i n the De p a r t me nt o f Me d i c al Genetics and Me d i c al B i o p h y s i cs at the Un i v e r s i ty o f T o r o n t o. F r om 1991 he was also n amed H o w a rd Hu g h es International Scholar. Prof. T s u i 's publications exceed a hundred, i n c l u d i ng one b o o k, numerous papers, chapters i n books a nd r e v i ews. F or his achievement , he has since 1989 received numerous prestigious awards and honours, i n c l u d i n g, a m o ng others: Ro y al Society o f Canada Centennial A w a rd (1989): F e l l o w. R o y al Society o f Canada ( 1 9 9 0 ); F e l l o w, T he Ro y al Society o f L o n d on (1991); Order o f Canada ( O f f i c e r) (1991); T he Cresson Me d a l, F r a n k l in Institute ( 1 9 9 2 ); and Elected M e m b e r, A c a d em ia Sinica (1992). One often thinks o f a scientist'w o rk as being specialist i n nature and c o n f i n ed to a laboratory. In Prof. T s u i 's w o r k, h owe v e r, we se not o n ly a successful probe into the most fundamental and m i c r o s c o p ic c omp o n e nt o f the h uman b o d y, but also i mm i n e nt cure s f o r both cystic fibrosi as w e l as other hereditary diseases. F o r h is outstanding achievement and his dedication to the w e l l - b e i ng o f i n n ume r a b le patients, may I ask you, M r. Chancellor , to bestow upon our distinguished alumnus.
