A New Fac ult y o f Me d ic in e a n d a G r ow i n g Graduate School Entering in to the 1980s, the U niversity had an undergraduate en rolm ent o f around 5,000, and the num ber o f boards o f studies had increased to ove r 40. A fifth fa cu lty — the Faculty o f Medicine, was established in 1977, and after fo u r years o f intensive preparation, the new faculty adm itted its first batch o f students in 1981. M e d ic a l graduates w e re p roduced fo r the first time in 1986 and the fa cu lty g rew to fu ll strength in 1987 w ith 18 departments. Postgraduate studies con tinued to expand h o rizo n ta lly and vertically. The Graduate School launched its first doctoral programme in 1980 and b y 1987, there w ere 28 graduate divisions in the Graduate School, o ffe ring a total o f 38 master's programmes, 15 doctoral programmes and tw o d ip lom a courses.
