A new O ffice o f Academic Links was also set up in the same year to provide better-coordinated and cost- effective adm inistrative support services. The office serves as a clearinghouse fo r information needed b y various University units seeking to engage in academic exchange activities. R e sea rch R e s e a r c h A c t i v i t i e s i n th e D e p a r tm e n t s Staff members in various departments have always been encouraged to conduct re le van t research to im p ro v e th e ir teaching and the ir a b ility to inspire students, and to create new know ledge to better serve the community. Through out the years they have undertaken a w id e variety o f research projects, some o f w h ich are h ighly academic, w h ile others have strong application potentials. Their projects have successfully attracted government grants and financial sup­ p o rt from private foundations and or­ ganizations. Research results are either published in the fo rm o f books and articles in in te rna tiona l journals, or transformed into new skills and tech­ niques to benefit the comm unity at large. R e s e a r c h I n s t i t u t e s a n d Cen tre s To promote interdisciplinary research and encou rage c o lla b o ra tio n w ith overseas institutions, the University has also set up major research institutes to p rovide the necessary support facilities and explore collaboration channels. Under these institutes are d iffe re n t re se a rch ce n tre s w ith th e ir o w n specialities. Each year these research institutes and centres organize a large number o f international conferences, seminars and exhibitions to prom ote the exchange o f know ledge and experience.
