The g ra n d opening o f S haw College h e ld o n 2 n d M a rch 1990 College sign on the S haw cam pus The college is located at the northwestern corner o f the University campus overlooking Tolo Harbour. The first batch o f students were adm itted in 1988, and since then student hostels, an adm inistration building, staff quarters, and a 537-seat lecture theatre have appeared one after the other on its campus. On 2nd March 1990, Shaw College was officially opened by His Excellency the Governor and Chancellor o f the University, Sir David W ilson, and Sir Run Run Shaw. Shaw College view s in fo rm a l education as an integral and essential part o f college life. M onthly dinner lectures and visits organized under the Sir Run Run Shaw D istin g u ish e d V is itin g Scholars Programme serve to broaden the horizons o f both staff and students. The college also actively encourages students to participate in extracurricular activities, and assists them to set up interest groups and academic organiza­ tions. There are at present 21 such organizations, some o f w hich, like the Strategic Investment Society, the Qigong Society, and the Mental Health Society are innovations unique to Shaw College. There is an independent student maga zine, Shaw Beat, w h ich is very popu la r among students. The new college also has its ow n student union and hostel resident association.
