In 1978, the Federation o f A lum ni Associations o f The Chinese U niversity o f H ong Kong was fo rm a lly set up. It represents the amalgamation o f forces o f the alum ni o f Chung Chi College, New Asia College, U nited College, the Graduate School, and the School o f Education. It recently included as its members the alum ni o f Shaw College. A subsidiary o f the federation, the Education Foundation o f the Federation o f the A lum n i A ssociations o f The Chinese U niversity o f Hong Kong, was incorporated in 1982 as a n o n -p ro fit c h a rita b le o rg a n iz a tio n to p rom o te educational developm ents in Hong Kong. W ith fu ll support from CUHK alum ni, it has since established a p rim a ry school, a kindergarten, and a secondary school. B y 1993, there are a to ta l o f 34 a lu m n i associations a ll over the w o rld : 18 in Hong Kong, 14 in N orth America, one in Australia and one in Sabah. U n i v e r s i t y C o n v o c a t i o n F u lly aware o f the lo ya lty o f its graduates, th e ir concern fo r the developm ent o f th e ir alma mater, and the possible contributions they can make towards the continuous g row th o f the U niversity, the U niversity decided to establish in its 30th anniversary year the U niversity Convocation. The Convocation w ill help to prom ote the image o fthe U niversity, im prove its status, raise funds fo r its developm ent, and p rovide a m ore effective channel fo r alum ni pa rticipa tion in U niversity affairs and p o lic y making. According to U niversity regulations, Convocationmembership is autom atically extended to a ll U niversity graduates and holders o f a diplom a issued b y the Post- Secondary Colleges Joint D iplom a Board in August 1963. A ny person w h o had obtained a diplom a issued by Chung Chi, N ew Asia, U nited College o r the Post- Secondary Colleges Joint D iplom a Board p rio r to 1963 after successful com pletion o f a four-year programme, and any one w ho has been awarded a postgraduate diplom a b y the U niversity Senate after attending an approved course o f study fo r n o t less than one year is also e lig ib le to jo in the Convocation. A ll members have the rig h t to at tend Convocation meetings and to vote. They can elect th e ir representatives to be appointed asmembers o fthe U niversity Council. The firstmeeting o fthe Convocation was already he ld on 9th September, and the chairman and members o f its firs t standing comm ittee have been elected. The ir inauguration ceremony w ill be held on 16th O ctober at the Pearl Reunion — the banquet to commemorate the 30th anniversary o f The Chinese U niversity o f H ong Kong.
