I n a u g u r a t i o n o f University Student Un ion The U n ive rsity student u n io n was inaugurated on 19th March 1971 'to unite the students o f the U n ive rsity in a sp irit o f democracy and autonom y, to p rom ote student welfare, moral w e ll- be ing and intellectual developm ent, to organize athletic activities and to serve the comm unity'. Student participation in University governance began in 1972 w ith the es­ tablishment o f the Senate Comm ittee on Staff-Student Relations, and th rough the Student Consultation Comm ittee established fo r each board o f studies. T h ro u g h u n io n activities and p a rtic ip a tio n in U n iv e rs ity a ffa irs, students learned to lo o k after the ir ow n w e ll-b e in g and to be re sp o n s ib le citizens o f the comm unity.
