News in Brief Council Membership New Council Members Mr. Lee Kam-chung and Mr. Lau Sai-yung have been elected by the Convocation as members of the University Council from 25th June 1994. New Pro- Vice-Chancellor Prof. Kenneth Young, professor of physics, has been appointed as pro-vice-chancellor for two years from 1st August 1994. New Head of Chung Chi College Prof. Ranee P.L. Lee, professor of sociology, has been appointed as head of Chung Chi College for four years from 1st August 1994. University Members Honoured • Three members of the University were honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours List announced on 10th June 1994. Dr. James Z.M. Kung, vice- chairman of the University Council, and Prof. S.T. Chang, professor of biology, were made Officers of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE), while Mr. David A. Gilkes, University bursar, was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE). • Vice-Chancellor Charles Kao received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Durham, UK on 21st May. • Prof. C.N. Yang, distinguished professor-at-large, and Prof. Yau Shing -tung, professor of mathe- matics, were elected foreign academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on 8th June 1994. • Prof. C.N. Yang was awarded the prestigious Benjamin Franklin Medal by the American Philosophical Society for his significant contribution to theoretical physics. • Prof. Ambrose Y.C. King was elected Fellow of Academia Sinica, Taiwan in July 1994. Vice-chancellor's Trip to Australia Vice-Chancellor Charles Kao spent 10 days in Australia in April 1994 visiting Australian institutions and meeting CUHK alumni in the country. In Canberra Prof. Kao addressed the Board of the Australian Vice-chancellors' Committee at their headquarters, urging Australian academics to exploit the existing links between Hong Kong universities and mainland tertiary institutions to develop tripartite relations which could benefit all parties concerned. Prof. Kao then visited Australian National University and the University of Canberra. He also met with Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans and Senior Adviser to the Minister Jeff Bentley, who is former Australian Consul-General in Hong Kong. In Sydney the vice-chancellor attended a special workshop on optical fibre communications and discussed information technology opportunities with Mark Skeats, director of the Fibre Optics Technology Centre of the University of Sydney, and the technical staff of Optus, the second largest telephone network provider in Australia. He also gave a talk on the industrial development of Hong Kong at the Sydney Institute, a think-tank for the Australian government. During the last part of his trip, Prof. Kao attended the inaugural ceremony of the Alumni Association of CUHK in Sydney, and talked to some 40 alumni about the recent and planned developments of The Chinese University. Professorial Appointments Seven new professors were appointed between May and October 1994: Professor of Finance Prof. Leslie Young has been appointed professor of finance from 1st May 1994. Bom in China in 1949 , Prof. Young received his university education in New Zealand and obtained his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the University o f Wellington in 1968 and 1969 respectively. He then went to Oxford for doctoral studies and was awarded a D.Phil. degree in 1971. After graduation, Prof. Young worked at Oxford News in Brief 27
