Professor of Surgery Dr. Sydney Chung Sheung-chee has been appointed professor of surgery from 1st October 1994. Prof. Chung received his medical education in Ireland and obtained his M .B. B.Ch. and BAO degrees from the National University of Ireland in 1980. After a year of internship in Scotland, Prof. Chung returned to his place of birth, Hong Kong, in 1981 and served as medical officer in Kwong Wah Hospital. He joined the University as lecturer in surgery in 1984, was promoted to senior lecturer rank in 1988, and reader in 1992. He was awarded an MD degree by the University in 1988. Prof. Chung is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and a member of the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. Prof. Chung is married, and has two children. Professor of Economics Dr. Liu Pak-wai has been appointed professor of economics from 1st October 1994. Bom in Hong Kong, Prof. L i u received his university education in the United States. After taking his BA degree from Princeton University in 1971, he went to Stanford University for graduate studies. He obtained his MA degrees in economics and education in 1975, and his Ph.D. degree in 1977. Prof. L iu joined The Chinese University as lecturer in economics in 1976, was promoted to senior lecturer rank in 1983, and reader in 1990. He also served as University Registrar from 1982 to 1986. Prof. Liu is married, and has two children. Professor of Medicine Dr. Jean Woo has been appointed professor of medicine from 1st October 1994. Prof. Woo read medicine at the University of Cambridge and received her BA, M.B. B.Ch., MA , and MD degrees in 1971 , 1974, 1975 and 1988 respectively. Prof. Woo began her medical career as house physician at Charing Cross Hospital, UK, in 1975 and had since acquired extensive experience working in other medical centres and hospitals in the UK and Hong Kong, including West Middlesex Hospital and Brompton Hospital in the UK, and United Christian Hospital, Queen Mary Hospital, and Nethersole Hospital in Hong Kong. Prof. Woo joined The Chinese University as lecturer in medicine in 1985. She was promoted to senior lecturer rank in 1989 and reader in 1992. Prof. Woo is a fellow of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of Edinburgh and London. Prof. Woo is married, and has two children. U N Organizations F i nd C U Campus I deal f o r Regional Meetings The World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Drug Control Program (UNDCP), and the International Cell Research Organization (ICRO) chose CUHK as the venue of their regional meetings in August 1994. WHO and UNDCP hosted a training course on the prevention of drug abuse and H I V infection from 1st to 20th August. The first of its kind in the western Pacific, the course trained frontline workers from China, Hong Kong and Macau how to help people overcome problems of drug abuse and HIV infection. Participants visited local treatment and rehabilitation centres and obtained first-hand experience of dealing with substance abuse and AIDS. The University's Department of Psychiatry was a coorganizer of the training course. ICRO under UNESCO ran an international training course on 'Advances in Wastewater Treatment Technology' from 22nd to 27th August. Conducted by experts from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Ireland, the training course provided a forum for scholars from various parts of the world to exchange experience and share information on advances in wastewater treatment technology. On 25th August, ICRO also presented a special symposium at the University's Cho Yiu Conference Hall. ICRO executive committee members, most of whom world renowned cell research scientists, gave talks on recent advances in cell biology. Topics News in Brief 30
