University Members Serving on External Committees The following members of the University have been appointed/reappointed by His Excellency the Governor to serve on various boards and committees: • Prof. Yeung Yue-man of the Department of Geography, as a member of the Town Planning Board, and its Metro Planning Committee from 8th April 1994. • Dr. Leslie N.K. Lo, dean of education, as amember of the Council of the Hong Kong Institute of Education for two years from 25th April 1994. • Prof. Tzong-biau L i n of the Department of Economics, as a member of the A ir Transport Licensing Authority for two years from 15th May 1994. • Prof. Charles K. Kao, vice-chancellor of the University, as a member of the Board of the Hong Kong Industrial Technology Centre Corporation for one year from 1st June 1994. • Prof. Thomas C.W. Mak of the Department of Chemistry, as amember of the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation for two years from 8th June 1994. • Mr. Andrew W.F. Wong, lecturer in government and public administration, as a member of the Policy Complaints Committee for a period up to 31st December 1995. Tam, pro-vice-chancellor, as a council member of the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong from 20th June 1994. • Dr. Lesile Lo, dean of education, as a member of the Hong Kong Examinations Authority from 1st August 1994. • Prof. Allan M.Z. Chang of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, as a member of the Mi dw i ves Board for three years f r om 5th September 1994. • Prof. John A. Gosling of the Department of Anatomy, as a member of the Nursing Board of Hong Kong for three years from 8th September 1994. • Dr. Lam Kin-che, senior lecturer in geography, as a director of the Joint University and Polytechnic Admissions System (JUPAS) for the academic year 1994-95. Croucher Foundation Sponsors Five More Research Projects The Trustees of the Croucher Foundation recently pledged donations totalling HK$2,256,700 for five research projects launched by members of the University: (1) HK$600,000 for 'Molecular Cloning and Expression of Crustacean Allergens', conducted by Dr. K.H. Chu of the Department of Biology. (2) HK$767,700 for 'Transgenic Study of Immunoglobulin Gene Hypermutation: Using Selectable, Chimeric E Coil gpt-VJ Gene Constructs to Investigate Role of Rearranged VJ in Hypermutation', conducted by Dr. Y.L. Chui of the Clinical Immunology Unit. (3) HK$162,000 for 'Incoherent Light Scattering Studies of Spontaneously Formed Vesicles', conducted by Dr. Xia Keqing of the Department of Physics. (4) HK$280,000 for 'Parallel Simulation Methods for Continuous Time Markov Chain on Maspar with Applications in Computer and Communication Systems', conducted by Dr. John C.S. Lui of the Department of Computer Science. (5) HK$447,000 for 'Theoretical Modelling and Experimental Study of Multi-section DFB Lasers for Advanced Lightwave Communications', conducted by Dr. Chan Kam Tai o f the Department of Electronic Engineering. Demonstrations of Cataract Surgery Techniques The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences hosted the Third Far East Cataract Surgery Symposium at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 4th to 7th June to promote two new techniques to treat cataract patients: phacoemulsification and scleral fixation of the intraocular lens, and to provide an opportunity for eye specialists to exchange information on cataract surgeries in Asia.
