CUHK Students Do the Varsity Proud Row to Victory F i f th Successive Win by the M e n , Whilst Women Stage a Comeback A la Oxford and Cambridge, a group of students from The Chinese University and the Hong Kong University conceived the idea of locally organizing a rowing championship between the two institutions — an idea that saw fruition in 1987. It was with great pride that CUHK lifted the winner's trophy i n both the men's and the women's races on 24th September this year, in the Ninth Intervarsity Rowing Championship held as always on Shing Mun River near the Hong Kong Amateur Rowing Centre. The CUHK men's team was trailing behind its HKU counterpart in the first 2,500 metres of the 3,000-metre coxed eight race. CUHK supporters held their breath as their boat narrowed the gap with the HKU team, and the concerted come-back effort in the last 500 metres finally yielded victory by a second's margin! What made the success all the more sweet was the fact tha t it was the f i f th consecutive win for the University. The women's team did The Chinese University proud too by regainin g the 1,500-metre coxed four race championship that it had los t last year after having won it consecutively on the previous four occasions. They were using their new boat which arrive d only two days before the competition. For both the CUHK teams, the will to win, and hours of dedicated practice the summer through, made possibl e another memorable sweep of the championship.
