Colleg e Histor y United College published its first college history in October. With Prof Alice Ng as the chief editor, the publication is in Chinese and comprises two parts. The first part describes the founding, growth, and future development of the college. It also contains six features on the college motto and anthem, the campus and its facilities, special features of the college curriculum, academic exchange programmes, student activities, and alumni profiles. The second part focuses on people associated w i th United College and includes profiles of past chairmen of the college board of trustees, narrations by former college heads, and snapshots o f college life. Alumni from different eras and long-time staff have also been invited to write on the college's evolution, and to express their sentiments towards the college. Statistical information regarding United College's development in the past 40 years concludes the book. Anniversar y Banque t The 40th anniversary banquet was held on 19th October at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. Close to 500 guests attended. A reception and an exhibition o f historical pictures preceded the banquet. The guest of honour for the evening, the Acting Governor Mrs. Anson Chan, and chairman of the college board of trustees Mr. Shum Choi-sang presented awards t o 67 peop le w h o have made impo r t ant contributions to the college. Head of college Prof C.Y. Lee presented long service awards to 57 veterans who have been with the college for over 20 years. Mrs. Anson Chan was also invited t o officiate at the sealing of a United College time capsule. Inside the capsule are the English and Chinese versions of the 1996 Hong Kong Report, the newly published college history, a group photograph of the college board of trustees, the name list of the executive committee o f the college alumni association as well as o f United graduates over the past 40 years, the evening's programme, a diamond brooch and pendant, a laser disc about the 40th a n n i v e r s a ry c e l e b r a t i o n s, a s t u d e nt handbook, and a pamphlet on the current United College Student Union. • On 22nd October, the United College time capsule was buried on the college campus in a formal ceremony.
