The Chinese partners of the research have i n c l u d ed th e Be i j i ng Institute of Information and Control; the Institute o f Quantitative and Technical Economics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences ; and the De p a r t me nt of Na t i o n al A c c o u n t s Statistics ( f o r me r l y the De p a r t me n t of Statistics on National Economic Balances) of the State Statistical Bureau. Research results w i l l be made available to sinologists and students of the field , whereby clarifying misconceptions about the ma c r o e c o n om ic d e v e l o pme nt a n d potential of China. Th e programme w i ll also serve as a f o r um for the exchange of views between scholars in China, Ho ng Kon g and the rest of the world. E c o n om i c D e v e l o pme nt b y Re g i on O n e o f t he k e y p r o j e c t s u n d e r t he programme is entitled 'China's Regional E c o n om ic D e v e l o p m e n t ' . F i n a n c i a l l y supported by the Ho n g Ko ng Institute o f Asia-Pacific Studies and the University, the project w o n a research grant of HK$253,000 from the Research Grants Council in August 1990. Undertaken by Prof. T. T. Hsueh, the project spanned over t w o years, during wh i c h various aspects of China's regional de v e l opment we re t h o r o u g h l y studied. These include the development patterns of 30 provinces and municipalitie s directly u n d e r t he c e n t r al g o v e r n m e n t a n d autonomous regions (PMARs); the problem of inequality among the PMARs ; regional d e v e l o p m e n t b y f a c t o r analysis ; development between core and peripheral regions ; balanced and unbalanced strategies for regional development ; interregional flow of national income ; r eg i onal structural changes in th e pre- a nd post - r e f o r m periods ; the d i s t r i bu t i ona l relationship between central and local public finances ; tertiary sector development at the regional level ; app r a i s al o f r e g i o n al i n d u s t r i a l development i n the Third Line ; and spatia l changes in the Pearl River Delta. Three international conference s have been hel d on the University campus to discuss research findings. They are ‘China's National Economic Development' (1988), 'Productivity, Efficiency and Reform in China's Ec o n omy ' (1992), a nd 'China's Regional Economic Development' (1993). The conferences were attended b y scholars and experts from China, the United States, Australia, Taiwan, and Hon g Kong. Research findings have also been published in article and boo k forms (see list on pages 30-31).
