NEWS IN BRIEF New Council Members • Ms. Yan Hau-yee has been elected b y the University Convocation as a member of the University Council from 29th June 1996. • Prof. Fung Kwok-pui has been elected by the Assembly o f Fellows of Shaw College as a member o f the University Council for three years from 1st August 1996. • Prof. Patrick Cheng Yiu-chung has been n om i n a t ed b y His E x c e l l e n cy the Chancellor as a member o f the University Council for the unexpired membership period of Prof. Wang Gungwu from 1st August to 17th October 1996, and for a further three years f r om 18th October 1996. University Members Honoured • Prof. Arthur K.C. Li, vice-chancellor, has been made an Honorary Fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge University. He has also been awarded th e President's Gold Meda l of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. • Prof. David Gwilt, professor of music, has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship b y the H o n g K o n g A c a d em y f o r Performing Arts. Appointment of University Officers Un i v e r s i t y Reg i s t r ar Prof. Richard M.W. Ho has been appointed University Registrar from 11th June 1996. A w e l l - k n o w n scholar in Chinese p h o n o l o gy and dialectology, Prof. Ho graduated from the University of Hong Kong i n 1969 and obtained his Ph.D. from the University of London in 1975. He wo r k e d in the media and pub l i c organizations before joining the University in 1979 as lecturer in the Departmen t of Chinese Language and Literature. Prof. Ho's interest lies in classical Chinese, and he has made impo r t an t contributions to the development of the University's language programmes. Prof. Ho has also been activ e i n community service. As a Regional Council member from 1986 to 1995, he is known for his efforts in preserving Hong Kong's heritage and in promoting art and culture. He has been a member of the Council for the Performing Arts, the Bilingual Laws Advisory Committee, the Language Fund Advisory Committee, and the Obscene Articles Tribunal. News in Brief 39
