public lectures on 'The Development of the Song Lyric from the Five Dynasties to the Qing Dynasty', 'Attitudes towards the Song Lyric during the Qing Dynasty' and 'Major Song Lyric Writers of the Qing Dynasty' on 4th, 8th and 10th October respectively. Conferences (March- October 1996) • The Department of History and New Asia College co-organized a conference on 'Politics and Religions in Ancient and Medieval Europe and Asia' on 26th and 27th March 1996. • The Department of Translation organized an academic conference on 'Studies in Translating into Chinese' from 1st to 3rd April. A book fair of works on translation and bilingual publications from mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong was held concurrently. The events were sponsored by the Translation Society of Hong Kong, Commercial Press (HK) Ltd., Longman Asia Ltd., Oxford University Press (China) Ltd., and Reader's Digest (Far East). • The Hong Kong Institute of Educational Research o r g a n i z e d / c o - h o s t ed the following conferences : - ' N u r t u r i ng Competent Teachers for Basic Education', in association with the University's Faculty of Education and the Ho ng Kong Primary Education Research Association on 5th and 6th April. - ‘ H e l p i n g Students w i t h L e a r n i ng Difficulties', in association w i th the University's Department of Educational Psychology on 10th and 11th May. - ' E d u c a t i on and National Identity — Ho ng Ko ng Education in the 1997 Transition ’, in association w i th the University's Department of Educational Administration and Policy on 1st June. • The Department of Philosophy organized an i n t e r n a t i o n al c o n f e r e n ce on phenomenology from 9th to 13th April. The conference was co-sponsored by the German Society for Phenomenological Research, the Ch i ne se Society of Phenomenology, and Chung Chi College. • The De p a r t me nt of Cu r r i c u l um and Instruction organized a seminar on history education in secondary schools on 13th April. • Ch u ng Chi College c o - o r g a n i z ed a conference on drug-trafficking, d r ug abuse, and the rehabilitation of young drug addicts with Lingnan College and the Conference of Juvenile Delinquency in China on 1st May.
