Helicobacter pylori have a significantly higher risk of developing this type of cancer. A team led b y Prof. Joseph Sung of the Faculty of Medicine lef t for Yantai in Shandong p r o v i n c e o n 21st A p r i l to paticipate in the study. Yantai is a hig h prevalence area for gastric cancer. Team members from the two universities carried out screening tests by endoscopy, and patients at high ris k were given antibiotic therapy. Forty pathologists from leading medical centres in 17 municipalities and cities in China participated i n the p r og r amme sponsored by the Fok Ying Tung Foundation and supported by the Chinese Society of Pathology. The programme aimed at giving intermediate-level pathologist s from China a chance to systematically review thei r k n ow l e d g e and practice o f diagnostic pathology. Lectures and seminars we re also conducted by pathologists at the University in conjunction with other local experts and experts from Canada and China. E x c h a n g e A g r e eme n t w i t h L o n d o n S c h o ol o f Hy g i e n e a n d T r o p i c a l Me d i c i ne The Department of Community and Family Medicine signed an exchange agreement with the London School o f Hygiene and Tropical Medicine , a subsidiary of the University of London, on 10th June. The f i v e - y e a r a g r e eme n t w i l l s t r e n g t h e n collaboration in education, training, and research between the two institutions. The London School of Hygience and Tropical Medicine will work with the Faculty of Medicine o n several major projects, including the organization of a master of public health programme and a summer programme i n epidemiology to train public health experts for the Asia-Pacific region. It will also help develop Hong Kong's first p u b l ic health school , currently be i ng planned by the Faculty of Medicine, into an important public health education and training centre in the Western Pacific region.
