Prof. Kao has always exhorted the University's teachers to team up w ith the best teaching and research ta len t in the w o rld , and this is consistent w ith his emphasis o n excellence. He has h e lped the U n ive rs ity C ouncil raise sizeabie d o n a tio n s fo r la u n c h in g p re s tig io u s le c tu re series, re c ru itin g ta le n t, and encou rag ing research and deve lopm en t. Prof. Kao's c o n trib u tio n s and un fla g g in g efforts in these areas are tru ly adm irable. An em in e n t and ded ica ted scien tist in his ow n rig h t, Prof. Kao has just earned another hon o u r o f the highest standing. Earlier this afternoon, the Purple M o u n ta in O bse rva to ry o f the Chinese A cadem y o f Sciences nam ed a m in o r planet discovered b y Chinese astronomers after Prof. Kao, in recogn ition o f his e xcep tiona l co n trib u tio n s to in fo rm a tio n te chno log y , especially in fib re o p tic comm unication and its application. H is discovery has inaugurated the inform ation age, and has con tribu ted towards the im p rovem en t o f the qua lity o f life and the dissemination o f know ledge.
