I w is h to say s om e th in g abou t Charles as a person and w h a t he has contributed to the U n iv e r s ity . T h e s e c a n be summed u p b y tw o acronym s — LAP and SPACE. LAP describes Charles as a person. 'L' stands fo r his boyish good looks. For a person w h o is abou t to retire, Charles loo ks su rp rising ly young . I have yet to fin d o u t h ow he can w o rk so ha rd and stay so y o u n g -lo o k in g . H is fu ll head o f b la c k ha ir draws m uch envy from a person lik e m yse lf w h o has so little u p there. 'A' represents his cascade o f awards, to use the Governor's phrase ea rlie r this w eek, w h ic h have b ro u g h t m uch fame and g lo ry to the U n iversity. These honours have culm ina ted in the recent Japan Prize and the nam ing o f a star as ’Kaokuen' this afternoon. He has been collecting awards almost as regularly and rou tine ly as we collect ou r salary. Charles has p u t the University on the academic map o f the w o rld and w e have all been basking in the reflected p ride from his awards and prizes. It is d iffic u lt to fin d a no the r scien tist w h o has ach ieved more. 'P' refers to Charles' personality. Surprisingly, fo r somebody w h o has spent so m u ch o f his life in the West, Charles to m y m in d pe rson ifie s the typ ica l Chinese scholar, in the sense tha t he is modest and w illin g to listen. H is tw o character traits tha t I fin d most s trik ing are his forgiveness and generosity. He has the forgiveness o f the Buddha and the generosity o f H en ry Ford, to avoid any com pa rison w ith w e ll-k n o w n lo ca l persona lities. H is se lf-co n tro l is also impressive as I have never seen h im lose his temper, no matter h ow heavy the pressure.
