Bulletin Spring‧Summer 1997
WINNERS OF PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT SCHOLARSHIP A nne Chan and Janet Poon, both BBA students concentrating o n human resource management, are respectively the champion and second runner-up of the Personnel Management Club Scholarship organized by the Hong Kong Management Association (HKMA ) in December 1996. The three local business faculties offering concentration courses in human resource management, i.e. the ones at Baptist University, Lingnan College, and The Chinese University, were invited to nominate two students each to compete for the scholarship in a contest held on 10th December. The participants were given two weeks to prepare a 15-minute oral presentation on the topic 'Impacts and Implications of Mandatory Provident Fund'. Anne and Janet feel that those two weeks were trying times since they coincided with their mid-term exams. They had one in fact on the very morning of the contest. With 'almost zero' prior knowledge about the Mandatory Provident Fund, the two had to consult lecturers and classmates familiar with the topic, and search for information at the Labour Department and the library. And juggling all this with exam preparations to try to seek an ideal balance was not easy. They did not even have time to discuss their individual analysis with each other. But their efforts paid off. They believe it was not so much the content that made the difference — all the participants had done thorough research — but their presentation skills. 'We were all very nervous on the day of the presentation, but comparatively speaking, I was calm. And both of us used interestingvisuals,'said Anne Chan. The students were presented their prizes at the annual general meeting of the HKMA on 21st January 1997: HK$9,000 for the champion, and HK$3,000 for the second runner-up.
