School. Prof. Yim received his diploma from the American Board of Surgery in 1992, and in the same year he joined the Department of Surgery at The Chinese University as clinical lecturer. He became chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery three years later. Prof. Yim has written widely on thoracic surgery, with publications comprising over 70 peer-reviewed articles, severa l monographs, and numerous book chapters. He is a member of many professional societies, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, the American College of Chest Physicians, the International College o f Surgeons, the University of Chicago Surgical Society, the New York Academy of Sciences, and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine. Prof. Yim has served as secretary-general and editor-in-chief to the Society of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia, council member to several local and international societies, and has edited many international journals. He is visiting professor to several institutions in China and is on the Advisory Committee of the Annual Chinese National Symposium on Thoracoscopic Surgery. He launched the Tin Ka Ping Training Programme in 1994 which enables thoracic surgeons from China to receive training at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Prof. Valerie A. Y. Levy Associate Professor, Department of Nursing Prof. Levy received training in nursing and midwifery i n the United Kingdom, and has had some 20 years' experience teaching and practising midwifery and neonatal intensive care in hospitals in England. Prior to joining The Chinese University in August 1996, she was principal lecturer in midwifery studies at the Royal College of Nursing in London. Prof. Levy obtained an M.Phil. degree from the University of Exeter in 1992 for her thesis on postnatal depression. She is currently working on her doctora l thesis on a grounded theory of midwifery at the University of Sheffield. Her other research interests include postpartum haemorrhage, the psychological effects of childbirth, and the effects of power structures upon women and childbearing. Prof. Levy has presented her research findings at international mi dw i f e ry conferences and in midwifery journals. She also edits the series Midwifery Practice: A Research Based Approach.
