Prof. Xu has published one book, 35 papers in refereed journals, and over 70 papers i n international conference proceedings and book chapters. He also taught graduate and undergraduate courses on robotics and control at the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon and directed the Robotics Education Laboratory. Prof. Xu is chief advisor of the Chinese National Space Robotics Programme, senior technical advisor of the United Nations Development Programme, and a steering committee member or technical advisor/reviewer o f programmes run by NASA, NSADA, Shimizu, Ford, Samsung, Goldstar, and Daiwoo. Prof. Xu is on the list of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and was selected as one of the 500 most influential scientists in the US in 1996. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a member of the New York Academy of Science. Prof. David Chen Yongqin Assistant Professor, Department of Geography Prof. Chen graduated from Zhongshan University in Guangzhou w i t h a BS in physical geography in 1984, an d an MS i n environmental science in 1987. In 1996, he obtained his Ph.D. i n forest resources from the University of Georgia. Prior to joining The Chinese University, he was a National Research Council postdoctoral fellow at the Environmental Research Laboratory of the United States Environmental Protection Agency in Georgia. Prof. Chen teaches mainly environmental studies, and environmental hydrology and monitoring. His current research includes hydrologic and water quality modelling, urban hydrology and water supply, and the application of geographic information systems and remote sensing techniques to watershed modelling studies. Prof. Shouquan Cheng Assistant Professor, Department of Geography Prof. Cheng obtained his BS and MS in climatology from Nanjing University in 1982 and 1985 respectively. Afte r graduation he worked as a lecturer i n the Department of Geography of his alma mater for five years.
