Prof. Devereux received his BA in economics and politics from University College in Dublin in 1977, and his MA in economics from the same college three years later. He pursued doctoral studies at Queen's University in Ontario, obtaining his Ph.D. in 1985. Upon graduation, Prof. Devereux joined the Department of Economics of the University of Toronto as assistant professor. He subsequently taught economics at Queen's University and the University of British Columbia. Besides teaching, Prof. Devereux has since 1990 held various visiting positions, including as visiting scholar to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, an d as consultant to the International Monetary Fund of Washington, DC. Prof. Devereux is a member o f the Canadian Economi c Association, the Western Economic Association, and the American Economic Association. He is also associate editor of the Canadian Journal of Economics and theJournal of International Tax Policy. Prof. Leo W. M. Lau Professor of Materials Science Prof. Leo W. M. Lau was appointed professor of materials science on 15th August 1997. Prof. Lau obtained his B.Sc. in chemistry from The Chinese University in 1976, and his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia in 1982. He spent another year at UBC before acquiring a PDF in electrical engineering. For the next 10 years, Prof. Lau worked as a research scientist of Surface Science Western at the University of Western Ontario, becoming leader of its electronic materials research programme in 1986 . Before joining the University, Prof. Lau was a professor at the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Western Ontario. Prof. Lau's fields of specialization includ e industrial liaison/ consultation, polymer surface engineering, process development for electronic device fabrication, and diamon d thin films and other hard-coatings. Prof. Serena Jin Sheng-hwa Professor of Translation Prof. Serena Jin Sheng-hwa was appointed professor of translation on 1st October 1997.
