of the education system in Hong Kong. A staunch supporter of tertiary education, Dr. Lee has h ad a l o n g a nd close association w i th the University. He was the Founding Treasurer of the University 1963-82 and then chairman of the Council from 1982 onwards. Under his leadership, the University has g r own from strength to strength. It is n ow an internationally renowned university w i th 13,000 students and a spacious campus of 134 hectares, o f f e r i ng a c omp r e h e n s i ve range of academic programmes and p r oduc i ng excellent research. I n the past three decades, Dr. Lee has raised huge sums for the development of the University. He himself has made a generous donation to e s t a b l i sh t he We i L un F o u n d a t i on En d owme nt Fu nd i n s uppo rt of the v i s i t i ng p r o f e s s o r s h i p / f e l l o w s h ip programme at the University to promote t he c r e a t i on a nd d i s s em i n a t i on of k n ow l e d ge and to s t r eng t hen international scholarly exchange. After his retirement, Dr. Lee w i ll maintain close ties with the University as a Life Member of the Council. Dr. Lee Hon-chiu Succeeds Dr. Lee Quo-wei as Council Chairman The Chancellor of the University, Mr. Tung Chee-hwa, appointed Dr. Lee Hon-chiu as the new chairman of the University Council. The appointment took effect on 24th October 1997. Currently chairman and managing director of Hysan Development Company Limited, Dr. Lee Hon-chiu has been a member of the University Council since 1992. He is n ow chairman of the Terms of Service Committee and the Campus Planning and Building Committee, and a member of the Committee on Donations. He assumed vice-chairmanship of the Co u n c il o n 1st J u ly 1997. I n these capacities, Dr. Lee has made invaluable contributions to the University. The Lee f am i l y , mo r e o v e r, has g i v en t h e ir unremitting support and patronage to the University since its founding. A prominent bu s i ne ss l eade r, Dr. Lee is h i g h l y respected in the local and international business community. Also dedicated to c ommu n i ty service, he is c u r r e n t ly chairman of the Standing Committee on D i r e c t o r a t e / J u d i c i al Salaries a n d Conditions of Service, chairman of Stock Exchange of Ho ng Ko ng Ltd ., and a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. New Vice-Chairman and Treasurer Elected The University Council has elected Dr. Alice Kiu-yue Lam, University Treasurer, to succeed Dr. Lee Hon-chiu as vice- c h a i r man of t he Co u n c i l, a nd Mr. Raymond Kwo k, Council member, as the new Treasurer. Both appointments took effect on 24th October 1997. New Vice-chairman Currently co-chairman of Sotheby's, Asia, Dr. Alice Kiu-yue Lam was previously a practising solicitor and a successful banker. Her association w i t h the Un i v e r s i ty dates back to the late seventies, w h e n she s e r v ed as a memb e r of t he advisory boards of both the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration and the Three-year MBA News in Brief 43
