Medical News Promoting Laser Excimer Techniques The University has successfully applied phototherapeutic keratectomy (PTK ), an excimer laser technique , to treat patients w i t h corneal diseases. The technique can be used t o r emo v e v i s i o n - i mp a i r i n g s u p e r f i c i al c o r n e a l o p a c i t i es a nd smo o t h en the c o r nea l surface. It is especially effective for treating corneal scars and corneal degeneration. A n o t h er ma j or d e v e l o p m e n t i n excimer laser technology being studied at the University is laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK), the state-of-the- art surgery for treating severe shortsightedness. To promote exchanges in research, education, and clinical services related to excimer laser technology and surgery, the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences h e l d t he ' I n t e r n a t i o n a l S ymp o s i um a nd M i n i - f e l l o w s h ip o n Modern Challenges of LASIK and PTK' on 12th and 13th April at the Prince of Wales Hospital. Support Services for Leukaemia and Eye Patients Adult Blood Cancer Patient Support Group Adult b l ood cancer (ABC) patients at the Prince of Wales Hospital have formed a mutual support group w i th the assistance of the ABC Fund set up by the University's D e p a r t m e n t o f C l i n i c al O n c o l o g y . Inaugurated on 19th April , the group aims to facilitate c ommu n i c a t i on b e t we en patients and families to help them cope w i t h stress, increase patient awareness of the various treatment methods and their side-effects, and f o r m a territory-wide support network . Dial Eyecare A Fight for Sight Foundation telephon e hotline has been set up under the auspices of the Zonta Club of the New Territories to provide the publi c w i th information on problems and diseases related to the eye and to give eyecare counselling. The h o t l i n e , 1 8 7 8 8 2 6 , a l s o p r o v i d es i n f o r m a t i on o n the F i ght f o r Sight Foundation and on eye clinics in Ho n g Kong. The Foundation wa s established last y ea r b y t he CUH K D e p a r t me nt o f Ophthalmology an d Visual Sciences to help people w i t h eye diseases and other vision impairments. Visit by Presidents of Teaching Hospitals in mainland China A d e l e g a t i on f r o m t he N a t i o n al Association of Presidents of Teaching Hospitals of Medical Universities on the mainland headed by former director o f the D r um Tower Hospital of Nanjing, Prof. Tao Yi, visited th e University f r om 5th to 11th May 1997.
