Accountancy Students Show Their Mettle Top Scorers in HKSA/ACCA Examinations Graduates of the University's School of Accountancy outdid other candidates in the HKSA/ACCA joint examinations held i n December 1996 . The H o n g K o ng Society of Accountants announced i n the May/June 1997 issue of The Prospective Account : The Students' Journal of the Hong Kong Society of Accountants that the top scorers for three non-exemptible p a p e rs i n t he p r o f e s s i o n al stage e x am i n a t i o n are CUHK p r o f es s i ona l accountancy graduates. 1996 graduate K w o k Ma n - c h u ng topped other candidates i n Paper 10 — 'Accounting and Auditing Practice' (HK), while Regina Lee Sau-yee, also a 1996 graduate, was the top scorer i n Paper 13 —'Financial Reporting Environment' (HK) and Paper 14 — 'Financial Strategy'. Outstanding Researchers A project entitled 'Voluntary Disclosure Practice of Annua l Reports of Hong Kong Listed Companies' undertaken b y five second-year students f r om the School of Accountancy was selected as one of the f i ve Mos t Ou t s t a n d i n g A c c o u n t a n c y Student Research Projects i n an annual contest organized b y the Ho n g Ko ng Soc i e ty o f A c c o u n t a n t s . Th e p r i z e presentation ceremony was held i n May and attended by some 300 accounting teachers and professionals. Art Exhibitions Display of Worlds by Graduating Artists The Graduation Exhibition 1997 for final- year Fine Arts students was held from 31st May to 6th June i n the west-wing galleries of the Art Museum. The exhibition featured works by 34 students using different media, including Chinese and Western painting, sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and mixed media. A Bond in Art : The Ban Yuan Collection of Works by Gao Jianfu The Art Museum staged a n exhibition entitled 'A Bond i n Art : The Ban Yuan Collection of Work s by Gao Jianfu' f r om 19th July to 12th October at its west-wing galleries. The exh i b i t s — some 100 paintings and calligraphy b y Gao Jianfu (1879-1951), the founder of the Lingnan School — were formerl y in the Ban Yuan Collection o f Jian Youwen (Jen Yu-wen 1896-1979). Ga o J i a n f u r e c e i v e d traditional trainin g f r om Ju Lian (1828- 1904 ), which was subsequently enriched by exposure to Japanese and Western art in Japan, resulting in the development of a unique painting style, in practice and theory, o f 'synthesizing Chinese a nd foreign art, harmonizing the past and the present'. Jian Youwen, the Master of Ban Yuan, had been a student/friend of Gao Jianfu for several decades, w h o collected Gao' s pantings as early as the 1920s.• News in Brief 53
